1 Chronicles 6:48 Their fellow Levites were assigned to all the other duties of the tabernacle, the house of God. 49 But Aaron and his descendants were the ones who presented offerings on the altar of burnt offering and on the altar of incense in connection with all that was done in the Most Holy Place, making atonement for Israel, in accordance with all that Moses the servant of God had commanded.

50 These were the descendants of Aaron:

Eleazar his son, Phinehas his son,

Abishua his son, 51 Bukki his son,

Uzzi his son, Zerahiah his son,

52 Meraioth his son, Amariah his son,

Ahitub his son, 53 Zadok his son

and Ahimaaz his son.

These are the guys who did the dangerous heavy lifting.

The Atonement of Israel rested on their shoulders.

Going back to the easy English site....

Aaron and his descendants were the chief priests. The people brought to them the daily sacrifices and their gifts. Then the priests took these sacrifices and gifts and they burned them on the altar. Also, they burned incense each night and each morning on the altar for incense. These sacrifices were for the sins of the people.

The chief priest went into the most holy place once each year. He went in to meet with God. God can forgive sin only when something has died. So the chief priest took the blood of an animal, which he had killed as a special sacrifice. Nobody else could go into the most holy place.

The rules for this one day in the year are in Leviticus chapter 16. When Aaron died, the role (job) of chief priest went to his son Eleazar.

This list continues until the time of David and Solomon. During their rule, Zadok and then Ahimaaz were chief priests. Only the chief priest from the family of Zadok could go into the most holy place.

When I read these verses this morning... I was thinking of a Thanksgiving Turkey or a Christmas Buffet or a New Years Desert table.... Only the top cook in the family would oversee such an important event.... there's a lot of stress.... if the bird is dry or the deviled eggs are too tangy or the pie is raw in the middle.... it all falls back on the cook. The recipe.... the procedure... details... details... that's what makes a special event come together.

In Old Testament days.... that special event... it was daily.... when someone sinned they had to have a priest intervene with an offering. There were even offerings for the sins they did that they forgot or didn't know they did. This was serious business. I read that when the priests went into the most holy place... they tied a rope around their waste in case something happened. The other priests couldn't come in and rescue them if something went wrong.... if there was an incident... the other priests would use the rope to drag them out of there.

Now.... priests, preachers and teachers don't have to have a rope tied around their waste when they go in to talk to God. BUT... we have to remember.... they have a burden to make sure we have the truth so we can make an informed decision whether or not to accept Christ as our Savior.... If we make the wrong decision because of the priest [like my friend did] it lays at the foot of that priest....

Salvation is for everyone who will accept it....
