1 Chronicles 8:1 Benjamin was the father of Bela his firstborn,

Ashbel the second son, Aharah the third,

2 Nohah the fourth and Rapha the fifth.

3 The sons of Bela were:

Addar, Gera, Abihud,[a] 4 Abishua, Naaman, Ahoah, 5 Gera, Shephuphan and Huram.

6 These were the descendants of Ehud, who were heads of families of those living in Geba and were deported to Manahath:

7 Naaman, Ahijah, and Gera, who deported them and who was the father of Uzza and Ahihud.

8 Sons were born to Shaharaim in Moab after he had divorced his wives Hushim and Baara. 9 By his wife Hodesh he had Jobab, Zibia, Mesha, Malkam, 10 Jeuz, Sakia and Mirmah. These were his sons, heads of families. 11 By Hushim he had Abitub and Elpaal.

12 The sons of Elpaal:

Eber, Misham, Shemed (who built Ono and Lod with its surrounding villages), 13 and Beriah and Shema, who were heads of families of those living in Aijalon and who drove out the inhabitants of Gath.

14 Ahio, Shashak, Jeremoth, 15 Zebadiah, Arad, Eder, 16 Michael, Ishpah and Joha were the sons of Beriah.

17 Zebadiah, Meshullam, Hizki, Heber, 18 Ishmerai, Izliah and Jobab were the sons of Elpaal.

19 Jakim, Zikri, Zabdi, 20 Elienai, Zillethai, Eliel, 21 Adaiah, Beraiah and Shimrath were the sons of Shimei.

22 Ishpan, Eber, Eliel, 23 Abdon, Zikri, Hanan, 24 Hananiah, Elam, Anthothijah, 25 Iphdeiah and Penuel were the sons of Shashak.

26 Shamsherai, Shehariah, Athaliah, 27 Jaareshiah, Elijah and Zikri were the sons of Jeroham.

28 All these were heads of families, chiefs as listed in their genealogy, and they lived in Jerusalem.

a. 1 Chronicles 8:3 Or Gera the father of Ehud

It's getting harder and harder to get a commentary on verses. These long lists are so boring that even the commentators skip through! That leaves those of us who are only using an online Bible and online commentary... High and dry....

Never fear.... Easy English has a note or two.

This chapter has more detail than the previous list of Benjamin’s family (7:6-12). It leads to the history section of the book. That history begins with the family of Saul. He was the first king of Israel and he was a descendant of Benjamin.

Between verses 5 and 6, there was about 500 years. Ehud was the son of Gera. This Gera is not the same as in verse 5. Ehud was a judge (leader) in Israel who rescued Israel from the rule of Moab (Judges 3:12-30).

The family of Ehud was in Geba town. Then they all moved from Geba to Manahath as Gera directed them. Manahath was in the territory of Judah. This Gera was a son of Ehud.

Shaharaim (verses 8-11) was either a brother or a son of Ahihud. He went to the country called Moab. He probably went there because there was little food in Israel at that time. He had sons by two wives.

The towns called Ono and Lod existed well before the time of Joshua. It seems that they were in a poor state at this time. So, Shemed built them again. The writer mentions them here because people went to live there after the exile (Ezra 2:33).

In verse 27, one of Jeroham’s sons is Elijah. A Jewish tradition says that this is Elijah the prophet. But we cannot be sure. The Bible simply says that the prophet Elijah was from Tishbe in Gilead. It does not record his tribe.

The heads of these families lived in Jerusalem. This may refer to those leaders of Benjamin’s tribe who came back after the exile.

Ehud is one of my favorite characters in the Bible. He's a left handed swordsman who wields a double edged blade. He talked Eglon, a king.... who was huge.... rotund.... fat.... into being left alone with him. Then, he stuck his double edged blade into his belly.... this guy, Eglon, had a belly so bulbous that it swallowed the whole sword! Then Ehud.... to give the king a little more time to die.... told the kings body guards that Eglon was on the toilet and didn't want to be disturbed. I can just see Ehud now.... holding his nose with two fingers and waving the pretend stink away with the other hand. It's a very odd story.... which I point out every time I get the chance.... if there's one story this odd in the book.... maybe there's another....

I did another search and Bible Track has a note to add.

These dwelt in Jerusalem--The ordinary and stated inhabitants of Jerusalem were Judahites, Benjamites, and Levites. But at the time referred to here, the chiefs or heads of the principal families who are enumerated ( 1 Chronicles 8:14-27 ) established themselves in the city after their return from the captivity.

Jerusalem.... is in Judah. The Promised Land was split. Israel was in the North and Judah was in the South. Jerusalem was still the God designated center of religion. Jerusalem is located in Judah. Now we have all the chiefs and heads of principal families gathered in Jerusalem, Judah.

Captivity... that word keeps popping up. Those stupid humans just would not listen to God. So... God was forced to have them forcefully removed from Israel and Judah.... He put them in Captivity..... Captivity =TIME OUT.... so now the Captivity is over and they are returning home... all the big boys.... leaders.... are in Jerusalem... everyone is compliant.... like the first few minutes after a kid leaves the time out chair... all happy and willing to please.....

So.... take that commentators.... I found something to ramble on about anyway!
