1 Chronicles 17:16 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said:

“Who am I, Lord God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? 17 And as if this were not enough in your sight, my God, you have spoken about the future of the house of your servant. You, Lord God, have looked on me as though I were the most exalted of men.

18 “What more can David say to you for honoring your servant? For you know your servant, 19 Lord. For the sake of your servant and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made known all these great promises.

20 “There is no one like you, Lord, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears. 21 And who is like your people Israel—the one nation on earth whose God went out to redeem a people for himself, and to make a name for yourself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? 22 You made your people Israel your very own forever, and you, Lord, have become their God.

23 “And now, Lord, let the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house be established forever. Do as you promised, 24 so that it will be established and that your name will be great forever. Then people will say, ‘The Lord Almighty, the God over Israel, is Israel’s God!’ And the house of your servant David will be established before you.

25 “You, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. So your servant has found courage to pray to you. 26 You, Lord, are God! You have promised these good things to your servant. 27 Now you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, Lord, have blessed it, and it will be blessed forever.”

David went to the place where the ark of God was. Here he prayed to the LORD. He was not from a royal family. He had no natural right to be the king of Israel. But he was king because God made him the king.

It surprised David that God should make such promises to him. David considered himself an ordinary man. But God dealt with him as if he were a very important person. The LORD promised to preserve the future of his family. To David, this was such an honour. He did not deserve any of this. The LORD did it because he is God.

The LORD is the only real God. All other gods are false gods. The LORD chose only one nation to be his special people. That nation is Israel. God rescued the people from Egypt and he made them into a great nation. And he became their God. He is the God of the whole world but to Israel, he is special.

David agrees with everything that God has said. So David asks God to do all that he has promised to do. Then people will recognise that he is God. They will know that he is Israel’s God. And the kingdom will be strong under the rule of David’s descendants.

At the end of David’s prayer, he accepts the promises that God has made. David believes that God will do these things. David wants his family always to live with God. God has blessed that family and he will continue to bless it. What God has blessed, he will always bless.

I'm glad David understood who good he had it. I think that's something Saul was missing.

Being a pretty boy from a good family in today's society.... Saul would have gone to the best schools... he would have belonged to the most prestigious societies. He would have been groomed to lead. He would have taken fencing lessons or boxed with friendly foes in a ring under close supervision. He would have probably loved beer.

David on the other hand... was from the pastureland. His family were sheep herders. David knew how to sleep in the wild. He knew how to take on predators who stalked the flocks. He knew hand to hand and he could sling rocks that would kill. David knew meager meals and hard beds. The luxury of the kings life... wasn't lost on David.

Now God has just promised David that not only would his fortune remain, but his family would always be around.... well that's quite a promise.... and when God promises something.... good or bad... God makes it happen. Wow... David is grateful!
