Didn't you know that you couldn't work in St. Mary's County unless your last name was Raley?

Yes, it is. You must write a killer resume, have the needed skill set, create an excellent reputation, and learn to network among your peers. This goes for ANYWHERE, not just St. Mary's.

If you leave someplace under less than favorable conditions, do NOT burn bridges. It is still in some ways a small community and any bad word will follow you forever. I've learned about more jobs via the grapevine of my peers than I ever have through reading the classifieds.

I totally understand where you're coming from, my response:

Yes, and No....

Yes, because I have found jobs in St. Mary's county without knowing anyone or being related to anyone to get it, I've lived her all my life, my family name isn't a well known one, only 7 or 8 family members in the area with my last name even though we've leaved here and were raised/sort of from here. However, the jobs I had were for non-profit organizations and the hospital, not affiliated with the base. I recently just started working back down here, I spent 5 years working in the DC/Metro area because of that attitude environment and wanted to find a job based on my qualifications and not because a friend of a friend or something of that nature. The job that I am currently in, contractor employed, I got through a friend I graduated high school with after I left the Metro/DC area-loving the irony here, huh? However, I have recently put out resumes and went on 3 job interviews with no inside connections.

No, because the majority of people I know, including my sister, my two nieces, my previous and current coworkers, all say they've gotten jobs because they had an inside~I applied for a job with a contractor, had the experience, etc., I have a friend that works for them, she told me that they hired a lady for the job that was the niece of the hiring manager, her previous experience-babysitting! So there, I understand your frustration, it is a Dog Eat Dog World and this is Corn Flake County St. Marys...okay I will wait for the negative karma......

Well I don't think that it is. I will have been here 1 yr next week coming from Wash DC. I was looking for work faithfully about 5 different times from Oct 04 to April 05 and it is unrealistically hard. The temp agencies want you to quit your permanent job before they put you on any kind of assignment.

The major companies who can definitely match the incomes in the DC metro area will not respond to any sends from a career search website. I have done them all. I have faxed and e-mailed beautiful resumes to no avail. What's so crazy is that I went to the Maryland Job Bank in Jan 05 and the counselor there warned me that it wasn't going to be easy. She said it would get worse when they close the other bases and send those families down to the Pax River base. Imagine that.

The last straw is when I thought SAIC was going to hire me because I had outdid myself. NOPE. So I am still working an 1.5hrs away from my home towards DC. The only good thing about that is if I ever decide to move I know which way I am going (closer to my good government job). But, I really do like it down here. So who knows.

Whatever you do, don't give up, we deserve to work in the county where we rest just like anyone else, so forget those naysayers and keep on pressing!!! :duel:

i have to agree.. i have emailed my resume to every office on the list of contractors on the counties list on this site.. applied for any opening that they may have... and have yet to be called for an interview.. I had a 3.75 GPA in all my college classes, granted the 2 degrees that I have are from a 2 year college... but still it makes me ill when i hear about people being hired such as the one with "baby-sitting" experience only..

when i was taking computer classes there were secretaries.. who didnt even know how to turn the computer on???????

How old are you and do you have any disabilities?

The reason I ask is that have you ever considered the military?
