"Ivey Launches Crackdown on Gun Offenders

Upper Marlboro, Md. (AP) - Prince George's County State's Attorney Glenn Ivey wants to crack down on first-time gun offenders.

Ivey is set to announce on Tuesday that he's asking prosecutors to seek one-year jail terms for those convicted of handgun violations, even first-time and nonviolent offenders.

A conviction for carrying or transporting a handgun in Maryland can carry a term of up to three years in jail, but Ivey says first-time offenders have often served little or no jail time.

Ivey is also putting together a team of prosecutors to focus on gun offenses. He tells The Washington Post that he wants to send a message that carrying a gun has serious consequences. He says too often, people shoot someone impulsively out of anger.

There have been at least 129 homicides in the county this year, up from 110 at this time last year."

Once again... Maryland wants to crack down on gun owners as a means to combat violent fellons. Maybe someone should tell Ivey that it isn't non-violent gun owners who carry a gun to protect themselves that are causing most of those 129 homicides, but the violent offenders that he can't/won't prosecute doing the deed.

This isn't really news. P.G. county has given up on multiple-offense felons. The only ones left to go after are the 14 year olds who take up a gun in public for the first time. They don't know how to run from the cops yet!

Not in P.G. County any more. I was many years ago. That was when we used to carry our guns to school. Times have changed drastically since the 60's.
