Ok, I'll throw this out there just to get things stirred up!

What would you all think of a mall being built somewhere in St. Mary's County? Are you for/against it? Do you think that the stores could maintain a steady business?

Just interested in your thoughts...

yes, i'd like to see a mall here. other major malls are supported by the surrounding and nearby cities. i don't think the initial investment would be enough to build a mall interesting or large enough to draw much from outside the tricounty area, outside of initial curiosity. after that, it would just end up being a ghost mall, like the strip malls in the area. you have to have a customer base for a business venture to be successful.

All mall would be awesome in St. Mary's. The strip malls are ok, but I would rather have ONE place to shop not all the different places.

I think a mall down here would be dangerous to all the other businesses in the formentioned strip malls... or all those businesses will move into the mall, like Stabucks, and those strip malls will become eyesores... just what we need more of... i just think we need to slap a Casino into First Colony and bring in money, big time! that's where you'd find me: at the blackjack tables!

Oh God Forbid! then we would be bankrupt..and how would you explain to our children why there is no foor on the table??

I personally dont think that they are thinking of all the aspects of the damaage that they will do. Such as-

-the air quality down here is getting much worse. Because, there are less trees and more commuters, on top of the NavAir development. Not to mention the flock that races to this "mall" will cause the quality to go further.

-Homes are being taken from wildelife, without a blink of an eye.Sure I know that happens everyday anyway, with hunters and motorist "accidentally" hitting them. But, they are being driven outta their homes.

-Eyesores of local business's are being made. Because they can not keep up with the bigger names, such as a mall would produce.

-any look of nature, meaning rolling hills of green grass, trees all over, greenery...etc. are being distrubed and this will turn into a metropolis rather than a town. (a rather big town, but a town all the same)

-more road construction that so many complain about. Because they will have to fit the needs of the crying population that whines that its to congestied.

I will come up with more I am sure.

I don't live in St. Mary's county, so if a mall went up, I probably wouldn't shop there. I only live about 15 minutes from St. Charles Town Centre and rarely do I venture there. If I do, it's because I usually have to buy a present for someone.

No Mall for me - I abhor shopping as it is. I haven't been inside a mall in years. If I must go physically to a store and shop (shudder - horror of horrors), I would much rather frequent the small unique type of store and make a gift purchase or whatever that is a very special one of a kind thing. Or if I have to go "big" shopping - I'm redneck enough to put on my boots and kevlar and hit wal-mart as quickly as possible. I power shop in about 15 minutes (not counting line time). Malls have too much all at once and I have to spend too much time wandering around. My free time is much too valuable to waste.

Well, you are right, but...don't bring hunters into your battle for/against a mall. Take the word hunters out of your sentence and it makes sense; leave it in and it doesn't.

The removal of woods and forests, and increase in homes/businesses, etc. are the reasons why more wildlife are being hit by automobiles.

But so far, that has not deterred the population of wildlife statewide. In fact, most abundant wildlife has increased in the last few decades. Now the DNR is trying to stabilize or reduce a lot of these (whitetail deer for instance). Hunters and hunting help preserve the population and yet keep it in check at the same time. And one less deer hit by a car and one more deer shot by a hunter for a years worth of food is definately the way I think most would like it.

Anyway, only reason why I don't want a mall is like someone mentioned, the large number of stripmalls that would then be dark.
