Advice on Purchasing New Cell Phone

Reluctantly buying a first cell phone and wondered if anyone could provide some advice on the type of plan I'm looking for (like inexpensive). I have absolutely no intentions of using it for anything other than being reachable when my son has seizures in school. This doesn't happen that often, so I don't need anything elaborate like call waiting, screening numbers, watching tv, making coffee, whatever. Any suggestions?

You could consider going with one of the prepaid phones. Throw $50 at it and when that runs out just throw another $50 at it.
