How Do I...

Detract Brown Headed Cowbirds and Grackles from my bird feeders? The Grackles have been taking over for about a month now, but the other bird species tolerated them. Now the Cowbirds have taken over and I'm not seeing any of the other species... :frown: I want my finches, sparrows, and dark eyed juncos back!!!

Had a engineer at work that designed some equipment covers out of lexan so he could make bullet proof bird feeders out of the left overs.

We are using a Wild Bird Seed Mix. I was researching this a bit online after I started the thread and I found a few sites that recommended safflower as well as black oil sunflower seed. I'll give them both a try. Thanks!

Put a "Whites Only" sign at your bird feeder. :yay:

I've been into birds for many years, and I put feeders out all winter. When the grackles and cowbirds show up, it is time to put the feed away. Spring is here, and the birds need to switch to natural feed, pests and bugs. The only feeder I keep year round is the yellow colored finch feeder with Thistle seed. The only draw back is that thistle seed is on the pricey side. Put the sunflower, etc. seeds away until next winter. Your finches, etc. will still feed. The goldfinches, sparrows, and other small birds will not go away. Let the bigger birds take care of your yard pests.

First, like anything else, you must fatten it up for the kill. If you are a good cook, no BBQ sauce needed!!!!!
Very true, Grasshopper...<a href="http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008_ZNskw006" target="_blank"><img src="http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/7/7_5_135.gif" alt="Karate" border="0"></a> But, a good oil down and season rub will draw out the bird's most delicious flavors! <a href="http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008_ZNskw006" target="_blank"><img src="http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/18/18_2_104.gif" alt="Karate 2" border="0"></a>
