Just wanted to share this story with y'all and hear some of your thoughts and views on how you think it should have been handled. I personally believe they had no right in turning the mic off on her. Since she was talking about herself and not ALL students.

I agree. I find myself having a flashback to what 2A shared in another thread:

That is prophesied. Satan's influence will increase with homosexuality, pedophilia, abortion, pornography, and all the other things that have become "normal." Eventually it will be against the world order to believe in God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, pray, go to church, or worship anywhere.

I disagree. It's says (per the article) that it's policy that the administration reads over the script first to approve it - deviating from it will get your mic turned off.

What the problem is?

I was wondering about that..

So they read her speech.. edited and said do not say this.. and she did.

They shut off her mic..

I guess it's Ok to break the rules as long as you do it in the name of Christianity..

The article is rather short and doesn't say much about what she actually had in her speech.

I'll make my judgement when I see what she actually said...or was going to say.

The problem is that the administration edited (read censored) the original speech, chopping out references about God. But the girl felt it her right to exercise free speech and read it as it was originally scripted anyway. And that's why they offed the mic. I think we take this separation of church and state a bit too far sometimes. She is the valedictorian and it's her speech. If she felt her faith in God was a big influence in her success, then why deny her the right to say so. Geez.

What if she was muslim and wanted to tell everyone to come to Mohammed.. that he was the reason for her success, that her deep belief in the Muslim faith.. at what point is it "talking about" and at what point does it become "recruiting". Bottom line is, there are rules in place, whether she agrees with them are not a group of ADULTS leid the foundation for those rules, and they are expected to be followed. They edited her speech and made it in accordance to those same rules, she decided she was smarter and better then everyone else that made the rules so she simply broke the rules.

Here's a 17 or 18 year old high school student that was so set to get her Christian Message across that her parents actually hired a lawyer, and the lawyer lost.. but they weren't satisfied, so they did it anyways.

If you watch the movie you will find what she wanted to say..
You should provide the link that you watched. I hear her say about 3 words....short silence and then the children boo and hiss.

Was this girl proseltyzing during the speech? That wasn't implied in the article.

I wouldn't have a problem with it.

Nor would I if she said that her devout Hindi beliefs were the secret ingredient to her success, and because of this she's one step closer to Nirvana.

Nor would I if she said that she passed her final exams thanks to her reading tea-leaves.

Nor would I if she said that the Gaia Earth Mother gave her success as a reward for decorating her body with art made from her 'wombyn's blood'/

If you can't see that line in the sand, there's really no help for you.

:larry: I see that a big reason for this is that it was in Las Vegas and all of Nevada is directed around unGodly beliefs.

Actually they showed her edited speech on the Today show this AM.. and different of it parts were edited for different reasons. A paragraph was edited out specifically for proseltyzing.. the rest was mostly for mentioning god or religion. Once they saw her starting to go down that path, they did EXACTLY what they told her they would do.

They asked her if she submitted her speech prior, and if it had been edited, and if so, was she told what would happen..

She didn't answer the question, but went on to ramble about God, and how she thought about it, and decided she was going to talk about God. How she called HER lawyer and told him she was going to do it, while her proud parents sat there beaming in her glory..

Bottom line is.. Who cares.. it was a High School ceremony.. they did what they said they were going to do, end of story.. but now they have the press involved and making this 18 year old girl from nowhere a LOT more important then she really is, although not near as important as she thinks she is.

Where does it say she was just talking about herself? I thought most validictorian graduation speeches are really more directed to ALL the students
