Chimney Seal - Water Absorption Problem

A few years ago I had a water leak around the Chimney. After a few weeks it was finally traced to water coming through my Chimney bricks (age and absorption). The company "sealed" the exposed portion of my chimney (goes through roof) and the leak stopped completely. It now looks like I need another "seal treatment" but the company no longer exists. Can anyone suggest a company that will "seal" (they just sprayed some stuff on the exposed portion of my chimney) my chimney?

Thanks!

If you can get to it yourself, treatment is easy. I use Thompsons waterseal for brick and masonry on mine, once a year. Seams to do the trick. :yay: Try to pressure wash it before you apply it. It's lasts a little longer if you can do that. But it's not necessary. I just use a cheap garden sprayer to apply it. It's really easy and not messy at all.

If you have larger cracks though, and mortar missing, try filling those in with a mortar caulk. I found one that has sand in it and is colored to match the mortar really well.

If you can't do it yourself, go to Lowes and buy a gallon of the Thompsons, a 2 gallon garden sprayer, and hire a handyman to do it for you. It'll be MUCH cheaper than paying a chimney specialists, or painter to apply it. It's a 30 minute job, tops. If you have it pressure washed, it can be done over a two day period, but again, no more than 30 minutes each day.

Super! I'll wait for everything to dry out and run up to Lowes.

You are right (you already knew that!) - the person went up their with a garden type pump sprayer and hit it once. He then waited 30 minutes and hit it again.

Thanks again.

Ponytail,

I picked up some Thompson's Water Seal - Clear Multi-Surface Water Proofer. The can mentions (among other things)...brick patios and concrete driveways.

Did I get the right stuff?

Thanks!
