We all have options Christian or not. Red or blue car, leather or fabric, but for Christians, there is something that is not optional, the Holy Spirit. Jesus said the Holy Spirit is not optional. You must be born of the Spirit.
John 3:1-6

1Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews;

2this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, "Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him."

3Jesus answered and said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God."

4Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born, can he?"

5Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

6"That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Notice Jesus does not say you must be acted on by the Spirit or feel the move of the Spirit or any external involvement with the Holy Spirit. You must be born of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit must live within you as a Christian. Why?
Romans 8:1-9

1Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

3For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh,

4so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

5For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.

6For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace,

7because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so,

8and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

9However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.

So should I just sit around and wait? Maybe stick my thumb out to hitch a ride? Or is there a bus schedule?

You could say, "...sit around and wait..." or you could say, be still and know that I am God. I think that it is important to know what the Spirit is about and recognize the things that the Spirit is doing around you. Then you can live by the Spirit.
So, how do you get to know the Spirit of God? I think this happens as we pray and meditate on the Word and concentrate on loving others and worshiping God.
