may I ask why you inquired? are you thinking of getting one, or are you about to crack on us smog/pollution/gas guzzler owners?

I really like them, but don't want one now. Maybe a few years down the road when I'm married and have more children I'll reconsider. I will NEVER own a minivan.

I see most of them as a hazard everyday on my commute. They are too big to be a true commuter vehicle and I've seen just about everything from sideswiping other cars, to leaving paint on jersey walls, to climbing jersey walls, to being idiots and thinking they can do a u turn in the grass median and getting good and stuck. I think some of the smaller suv's are fine, and even some of the larger ones have their place, but lately it seems to be more just a status symbol kinda thing. I had one guy showing his off in the parking lot one day - complete with "winter drive". Sure enough the button on the inside didn't say 4 wheel drive it said winter drive. 
I think even the manufacturers know that idiots are buying these vehicles. :shrug:

) and I really miss it. What I'd really like to have is a Suburban. Sticking the kids in the 3rd row back makes for a much nicer traveling environment.

I put one in the 3rd seat and one in the 2nd seat. Then, they cannot touch each other. I love SUV's, and I will NEVER own a mini-van, NEVER.

All in favor of total...
...governmental edict (aka popular whim) as to the size and/or style of your: Home, clothing, leisure budget, reading material, computer and anything else you can think of, say 'aye'.
All SUV's fit the infrastructure they use. They pass governmental safety, liscensing and insurance regulations, properly so. Having satisfied the proper requirements to lawfully enter a nationwide market, that market will pick and choose quite nicely as to what the demand is.
Anyone who improperly operates a vehicle should be held accountable (and probably are, nes pas?).
Anyone think that maybe overall liscensing demands are to lax for most types of vehicles?

They set speed limits on roads, mandate if you can or can not make a U-Turn, tell you if you can build a house or a business on a lot based on zoning, they set laws such as no firearms in government buildings. Heck, they even set laws that say at what age you're allowed to work and get a drivers license.
I like my SUV. Do I NEED it? Probably not. It does make things more convenient, but my ancestors survived just fine without them... And some also survived just fine before airplanes, ships, and even the INTERNET (don't see how THAT was ever possible!), but that doesn't mean I want to live at their level of survival.

When I say 'edict' I mean when an arbitrary position is assumed outside of the legislative and judicial processes. The things you mention, like the things I mentioned such as meeting existing requirements, were and are done through a process which is responsible through our representative process, not 'the sky is falling' hysteria. At least in principle.
The additude that says 'you can't be safer because you choose to drive a safer vehicle' stems from the same mind set that says 'smoking is dangerous therefore we will tax it and spend the money on everything but reducing smoking'.
Fast food. Drinking. Now our cars. A self styled civil libertarian such as yourself might not want to take a position of whether or not you 'need' a given vehicle. The vehicle meets all existing requirements. They are safer and they much more efficient in terms of what they are used for. If you or I needed (chose) a Yugo to meet our daily wants and needs then so be it.

:shrug: Thought I was clear enough. Some of the larger suv's are too big to fit in their lane and rub up against the jersey walls. I don't think they are appropriate to drive in the small narrow lanes in and around dc. Therefore causing more accidents than actually preventing. Sure the occupants of the suv are safe, but if they hadn't been driving that huge suv there wouldn't have been the accident to begin with. JMO See it everyday.Originally posted by vraiblonde

By this logic, everyone should own the same size vehicle. So everyone will need to go out and buy an SUV?
Looks like vehicles are just gonna get larger and larger, so their owner can feel "safe."
