The St. Mary’s County Emergency Operation Center is coordinating efforts to assist citizens in the aftermath of Hurricane Isabel.

• Citizens, community groups, organizations, or businesses wishing to donate goods or services in the aftermath of Hurricane Isabel in St. Mary’s County should call Community Services Coordinators at 301-475-HELP. Non-perishable items will be accepted between 11:00 AM and 5:00PM, Friday, September 19, 2003, at Leonard Hall Recreation Center, adjacent to the Governmental Center in Leonardtown.

• All Convenience Centers are closed; the St. Mary’s Landfill will be opening to accept yard waste only. St. Mary’s Transit System (STS) will be closed Friday, September 19, 2003.

• Shelters are being consolidated; Leonardtown High School is the only location that will remain open.

• SMECO will have dry ice available at 10:00 AM at Walmart and Ridge Volunteer Fire Department. Additional delivery locations may be established. Limit two bags per household.

• Teams are being coordinated to begin surveying some of the damage caused by the storm, including fallen trees mangled with downed power lines. Citizens are encouraged to continue to take safety precautions by waiting at least two hours before returning to their homes until an initial survey is complete and officials have an opportunity to clear some roadways.

• The Department of Public Works and State Highway are working together with SMECO to clear blocked roadways. However, citizens are urged to stay off the roads. If you must travel, use extreme caution when passing through intersections with non-functioning traffic lights due to power outages and obey state and local law enforcement that are directing traffic.

For additional information, please call the Disaster Information Hotline at 301-475-4911/4912.
