"Happy Holidays" political correctness

My idea of political correctness is "Happy Holidays." It sounds like a pathetic attempt to not ignore non-Christians during Christmas.

In my workplace (non-government) we had someone give a Christian prayer before our annual awards dinner. Unlike some of the extremists in the ACLU, I have no problem with that.

But also, unlike some of the extremists in the Christian Coalition, I think we should recognize other religions during these type of events. Some of my co-workers are Jews and Hindus, and if I ran the awards dinner, I would ask one person from each of these faiths to say a short prayer before the Christian prayer. And if the workplace is setting up a Christmas tree in the lobby, why not invite some Jewish employees to set up a menorah?

Sounds like a much better solution than watering down Christmas for somebody's twisted idea of inclusion.

Where does it stop, Tonio? If they put up a Christmas tree in the lobby, then they put up a menorrah, then they put up a (whatever Muslims do), then a (whatever Buddhists do), then the Satanists come along and put up an upside down cross, then along comes Pete with his pepperoni and anchovies.

Where does it stop?

I really hate to see Christmas traditions go the way of the dinosaur. I think that's one of the problems with America today - to much diversity and not enough cohesiveness as a people. But what do you do? Ban all expressions of everything? Or let everyone put their junk out?

Good response.

I don't see how having representations of non-Christian holidays in December destroys Christmas traditions. My point is a bigger threat to Christianity and other religions is the watering down of Christmas.

I'd love to see an office lobby filled with all those displays, partly because I'm interested in learning about other religious celebrations. (Well, maybe I'd draw the line at the Satanism display. I imagine that it would include a CD player blasting King Diamond and Slayer and scaring off visitors.) America is home to many different religious beliefs, and that's one of the things I love about this country--we can worship any way we damn want without bloodthirsty tyrants (Stalin, Saddam, etc.) telling us otherwise.

And some Peteeza pizza (without anchovies) would really be good right now. :yum:

Sounds like your management is one step away from cancelling the day off on Christmas.

It's not that - it's that "all or nothing" thing that people do. As in, ALL religions must be represented or NONE. So when there isn't room for ALL religions or someone's religion offends someone else, there must be NO religions represented.
Well, maybe I'd draw the line at the Satanism display.
But you certainly see how a company or a town couldn't do that without risking the wrath of the ACLU, right?

That's the problem - we're too successful of a society. When you're too successful, people don't have to worry about things like food and shelter anymore. They have plenty of time to worry about whether a Christmas tree offends them or not. Of course, it could be worse - we could have warring religious factions killing each other. :ohwell:

Certainly, you would agree that anyone who would be offended by a Christmas tree is a weenie. That kind of person is just looking to get offended.

I see our religious freedom as being threatened on two fronts--the vocal extremists in the ACLU on one hand, and the vocal extremists in the religious right on the other. One side sees all religious displays as oppressive, and the other seems to want to turn the United States into a Christian theocracy.

I think anyone who's offended by "one nation, under God" is a weenie. I think the 2 people who objected to the Ten Commandments plaque up here in Baker Park and sicced the ACLU on us are weenies.

Amazingly enough, the very weenies who are offended by religious expression are the same ones who will b*tch to high heaven if you try to censor obscenity or pornography.
One side sees all religious displays as oppressive, and the other seems to want to turn the United States into a Christian theocracy.
The difference is that one side uses the court system to get their way. The other can only appeal to the masses.

...fear...me...
This may be one of those "touchy" subjects because, in a way, by making Christmas a federal holiday, in a sence, you have removed the "seperation of State and Church" just for the Birth of Christ... many non-Christans still celebrate Christmas, which keeps the Chrismas Tree partually 'non-religious' but you don't see many non-jewish people celebrate Hanukkah which sort of pushes the Menorrah to represent being Jewish and apart of the celebration of Hanukkah. SO setting up a Christmas tree may not be deliberatly trying to push a Christan tradition, that tradition belongs to non-Christans too... Unless I'm out of the info loop and it's just a shinny metal pole now...?

I totally believe in the recognization other religions and letting other religions have at least a chance to say a prayer or decline the chance to give an openning prayer would of been nice... I think hearing a Jewish prayer, followed by a Muslum prayer, then a Christan prayer may be too much for some non-religious people, but sometimes you may have to just bit your lip and deal, or just not come until after the prayers have been said...

Religions may just suck, but God rocks! (and he loves you, but this isn't the right forum for all of that. . .)

There is always "faith". But just in case you don't have any it sounds like you have a topic the next time you break out your Ouija board.
