Ok, I finally too the plunge. I own a digital SLR. YESSSSS.
I've been in to photography since i was a kid. I had a Canon AT-1 and my own darkroom. When digital came along, I got to borrow one of the first digital cameras, the Apple QuickTake 100. I wrote a review complaining that for $700, you should get a better lens than an Instimatic.
For the most part, digital cameras have followed the trend of improving the electronics while neglecting the optics. Even my Nikon Coolpics 950, which was state of the art a few years ago, had a pretty crapply lens and the telephoto adapter was a joke.
Of course, professionals could buy real digital SLRs, but they were in the $15,000 range. What I wanted was a digital version of my Canon EOS Elan, which is pretty much what I finally got a few weeks ago.
First, and probably most importantly, the Canon Digial Rebel is a true SLR with interchangeable lenses that fit lenses from 35mm Canon EOS models like my elan. In fact, I skipped the bundle and bought just the Digital Rebel Body, and I use the lenses I had for my Canon 35mm.
Instead of buying film, I bought a 512MB card, which stores about 150 pictures at high resolution before I have to dump them onto my PC. Having virtually unlimited film makes a big difference--on a recent trip to ocean city i took over 500 pictures.
I'm still learning, but I love this camera so far. If anyone wants to check out some pictures I took with this camera at the beach, go to this url:

I'd be happy to answer questions for anyone thinking about buying one.
