Vertigo

Anyone ever have issues with this condition? Diagnosed a while back and placed on medication. Am now becoming severely dizzy and off balance almost 24/7. My Dr has referred me to a Neurologist and am now beginning to become scared? Any thoughts, help, and or advice would be great.

What meds are you on? My doc gave me motion sickness pills but I tossed them because I didn't have any nausea. As far as the vertigo, it comes and goes on it's own - sometimes mild or severe, there's no knowing how long the episodes will last either.

I had to deal with vertigo on and off for approx. 3 years. Mine was not migraine related. Mine was an inner ear issue. They were never able to pinpoint it exactly, but they believed it to be related to a viral infection of the inner ear. I was able to keep mine at bay with decongestants. When I got a full blown attack, I had to use Antivert.

I noticed mine was always related to my sinuses. You might need those checked. Not something to worry about just your ears might be getting a little clogged and that affects your balance in your inner ear...

My mother-in-law is having problems with vertigo, too. The problem started the end of October. Since she is never sure when this is going to happen, she is no longer driving. Her doctor prescribed a medication, but it doesn't seem to be helping. My husband went to GNC and asked them about it. He bought her (sorry, I forgot the name) a liquid that is chocolate in flavor. She puts that in a glass of milk and drinks it. This has helped more than anything, but the problem still exists. She is going for an MRI on Friday. It is good to have some testing done to rule out another problem.

Try not to worry. This seems to be a pretty common problem that sometimes just works itself out.

Had my Dr referred me to an ear, nose and throat specialist, I don't think I would worry, but he skipped right past that and sent me to the neurologist. They are seeing me tomorrow....

But wait, there's more...
how ironic this is posted. I've been having equilibrium issues off and on today.

I was diagnosed with vertigo about 5 years ago, got some meds, laid on the couch for a few days, and it cleared up. I think the cause (in my case) was that a cold I had went spastic on my ear drums/canals or something and that's what caused it, but I can't remember precisely -- except it sucked to be me for that few days. :frown:

Did you have any fluid drainage?

no grey matter, if that's what you're asking.

honestly, I don't remember a lot about it ... just that it was shear hell ... not wanting to move in the least bit, being dizzy as hell ... imagine your drunkest night, when you go to lay down, and you get that inevitable case of the spins ... but for five whole days.

My step-dad has something called Meniere's Disease....it's an inner ear thing. He started with the vertigo about 4 years ago. When the attacks would come on they were bad. He was staggering and the vertigo was so bad it made him sick. After lots of tests it was diagnosed. He takes a diuretic to keep fluid from backing up in his ears, he eats a low sodium diet and last year had tubes put in his ears so he could use this machine called a Meniett which sends pulses of air into the ear, I guess to sort of disburse the fluid or keep it from settling or something. He found a great doctor in Fredericksbug, VA that specializes in Meniere's and has improved greatly. The meniett, which hospitalization won't pay for (at least at the time he bought his), has made a huge improvement. His attacks are almost nil. Maybe one or two a year and they only last about a day. :yay:

Good Luck.

when the Dr saw me a few weeks ago, he mentioned Meneire's disease and said this maybe the beginning for me of that, and like i said before at that time, he said my ears were very clear, no infection, and gave me the medicine and sent me on my way. Now I feel as if i am on a boat and can't get off the boat...I hate this! :frown:

I had problems with that early last year. They send me to have a catscan done. Turned out I was allergic to the contrast and ended up with a giant rash all over my body. So not only was I dizzy but also itchy. They gave me pills that made me sleepy but after a week it went away. I haven't had it bad enough where I don't want to stand up anymore.

I've had vertigo for over eight years now. It seems to come and go without any rhyme, reason, earaches, etc., etc. Have you had any problems with blood pressure, stress anything like that? I was on the same stuff you were given but it knocked me out. They switched me to benadryl at night and either that helped or I was going through the not going to have it for a while stage. I had the CAT scan done when my episodes first occured and they found nothing that caused it and I'd be willing to bet you'll come out with the same results. Please let us know. Best of luck!

I, also, have Meneire's. I was diagnoised about 4 years ago, when I was so dizzy and sick to my stomach for 5 days. I couldn't even walk to the bathroom, had to crawl. The meclazine did NOTHING except put me to sleep. NO, I wasn't dizzy at the time, but was just as bad when :boo: I awoke. There is a lot of informaion available online about this condition and helpful suggestions. I will try to relocate some of them and can pm them to you.
