Dental Insurance

I have decent insurance through my work but was looking around on the net for additional insurance. Looks as if in the not so distant future I'll be looking at getting braces to straighten up my bite. My insurance doesn't cover braces for anyone over the age of 19. So I've tried to find some other source on insurance and am coming up blank in the orthodontic department. Does anyone know of this type of insurance for adults?

A lot of dental insurances do not cover orthodontics. We have Delta Dental but I'm not sure what they cover because we don't have a need for that. I would imagine there are different coverages. You are really fixing up, ain't cha?

Let me know if you find anything. I've been looking for supplementary insurance that my dentist will take for a couple years now. :ohwell:

I would think your dentist would give you a list of the insurances in which he participates.

Actually the thing that sucks is I should have had braces when I was younger and my dentist never refered me to an orthodontist. My teeth are very straight but my bite is way off. The new dentist says that it's very possible that my bite is the cause of my headaches and the reason that migraine meds don't work. Too bad it's a $3500-$5000 fix. :bawl:

Too bad...sounds as if your timing was just a bit off. :huggy:

Do you think you could sue your parents for choosing a crappy dentist?

He did... there's only like 3 or 4, and they don't offer supplementary policies.
He did say, though, that if I run across something that's really good, he'd be interested in seeing it as well, and that there may be some supplementary policies out there that would pay a portion even if he were out-of-network.

Up tp what age though? That's the catch on mine. Nothing over the age of 19.

And I already told you what you have to do.

Search Careington, not much of a savings but you can get a 20% savings on braces for $6.95 a month. For other dental services they chop quite a bit off the national average cost and most dentists that participate accept your primary insurance too. I used them for a while a few years ago and while the dentists are few and far between I was pleased with about $2,000 of savings over what I would have paid by just using BCBS.

Even if you can't find supplemental insurance, be sure to sign up for the Flex spending account so that it'll at least be tax free. I did that then and always do. :yay:

Do you always use the amount you withhold? I've never participated in those-type cafeteria plans because I never know how much I'll spend in extras. I don't want to take out too much or too little. I do think they're good, though, for the person(s) who's "extras" are constant year-to-year or at least they'll have an idea of what to expect. :yay:

Yes, it's use or lose so you really have to estimate well b/c you don't want to give up your loot. However, it's gotten MUCH easier in the past couple of years b/c over-the-counter items are permitted. Before if I had extra cash, I'd stock up on contact lenses. Now, I stock up on lenses, cleaner, cold meds, etc... However, I usually estimate really well and most times end up a bit under. Last year I tried to estimate having an added family member 1/2-way through 2004, but then with all of her copays to specialists, I really should have put more in the plan. At any rate, it's not 'that' difficult. Plus, I use MS Money and can look at prior year expenses to get a good idea of what to put in the next year. When I knew braces were coming up I obviously put the max amount in b/c I knew that it would get used. If I ever do Lasik, I'll do the same thing.

With our plan with Delta, they will cover a total of $2000 per person for orthodontic care. I really should look into it having mine fixed.......

I think you are wasting $$. With the new boobies no one's gaze makes it that high anyway.

There is a man in Mechanicsville and he did my Uncle Stanley's braces for $200. He is not a trained dentist, but he is pretty good and cleans my grandma's teeth with a hunting knife. Anyways, my Uncle Stanley had teeth like a jackhammer and he used to nearly chew his bottom lip off everytime he ate dinner. That man used some scrap metal and fashioned up some braces for my uncle and they worked great! He even filed his teeth down for free! When them braces rusted away, my uncle's teeth was much better and a sight to behold. The only thing is you can see the bone in a couple of places where the metal digged into his gums but otherwise it looks pretty good. That man has done a few more since then and he practices on animals all the time. His rates are good and he gives a discount for adults and babies under 4 since they don't need to be knocked out as much. He can do it in his backyard or he will even come to your house if you lock up your dogs. I believe his name is Kenny and he has the big wishing well in his front yard.
