Get this! I am SOOOOO angry!!!

I tried to log on to my AOL account and it kicked me off, telling me to contact Member Services. When I did that, the woman I spoke to wanted the "billing" address on my account. Since I've had my account for 7 years and moved to my current address 5 years ago, I didn't have the street address of my old house.

I had the city, state, zip code, street name, the credit card number my account is billed to - I had EVERYTHING except the street address of my old house. So the representative cancelled my AOL account - an account that I've had for 7 years.

I am infuriated and will NEVER use these a$$holes again! I hope MSN puts them out of business. GRRRRRRR!!!!! Not that those jerks care about losing a customer - I think we can safely say that they could give a $hit about their customers if they'd rather cancel my account because I didn't know a 5 year old address!!!!

AOL is for the birds

 I had AOL for two months before cancelling them. First, just like you, it kicked me off the 'net any number of times, or would simply "hang up/lock up" my PC. Secondly, I like Outlook Express for my mail service, and at the time - March of this year, AOL did not support that program. Since I was on a two month free trial with them, I just called them up and told them I didn't want to suscribe to their services anymore.
I went to Earthlink.net and have had very few problems with their service, and their tech support is great.

I actually liked AOL for the kids - I could control their accounts and keep the porn spam from getting to them. I, personally, don't use my AOL account - we've got cable access and real email addresses, plus I use Outlook. But I need a national provider so I can get online when I'm travelling.

So who do we like? Earthlink? MSN? Any recommendations?

I was just playing Vrai

I have earthlink and love it, I know quite a few people that have MSN and like it, and I know a few people that use AT&T worldnet and like it too.

Earthlink has a great DSL package that allows you to use dialup also, you can also get a discount if you use Sprint for long distance.

Penn I had AOL since 1996 and just cancelled my AOL account. Same problems. I thought with each new upgrade it would get better but it never did. I have had MSN, Earthlink, Verizon, AT&T Worldnet, Juno, AOL and Comcast. I have tried just about all the free service offers out there, and they all have pro's and con's.

Now when I called to cancel my AOL account they were very nice. They extended our service for 3 months at no additional charge. It sounds as if you had an a$$ for a representative who deserves to be on the next chopping block in the next round of job cuts. I don't know if you talked to a manager but I would call back and speak to one. Who knows? Maybe they will offer a few free months for your hassle.

If your using a dialup connection, the best luck I've had is with NetZero. Better service than AOL, and only $9.95/month.

I've had an AOL "Bring your Own Access" $14.95/month account, for travel and backup to DSL/Cable. Maybe NetZero is a better alternative??

We use earthlink and it is great. I never get kicked off or have problems connecting via dialup. They also offer something called "Surf Monkey" for kids, which I use for my son, to limit web site access as well as the spam and popup blocker. If I could justify it I would have their DSL service. But hubby would have a hard time paying $50 a month for internet - but not for cable - go figure.

I'm liking either Earthlink or MSN because they have local numbers for Deep Creek Lake, which is where I'd use it the most. Plus MSN has an AOL migrating tool so my kids could get their buddy lists back and my daughter could retreive her filing cabinet, which is where she's got her college stuff stored.

But I still have no idea why they wouldn't let me access in the first place - that's why I called customer service.

It's been a while, vrai, but as IM4Change said, you might have run across a dunderhead customer service rep who had no business taking calls that day, or any other for that matter. I just got fed up with them, and asked around at a few PC shops and
was recomended to Earthlink. They have very good features; the spam killer, pop-up blocker, the new Access 2003 program, etc, so I'm happy with them.

I couldn't log into my Webmail last night. Now you have me wondering. Maybe a big glitch in their system???
