State Police ‘Operation Eye-83’ Results In Hundreds Of Citations On I-83 During Three-Day Traffic Safety Initiative

(HUNT VALLEY, MD) – In response to citizen complaints about dangerous drivers on I-83, a combined team of Maryland state troopers conducted a three-day focused traffic safety initiative on the interstate that resulted in more than 400 citations and warnings being issued.

From May 19th through the 21st, “Operation Eye-83” deployed about two dozen state troopers from the Golden Ring Barrack, the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division and the Automotive Safety Enforcement Division on I-83 for a targeted enforcement initiative in response to multiple citizen complaints about speeding and reckless driving on the interstate. Troopers focused their efforts on both passenger and commercial vehicles exceeding the speed limit and being driven in a reckless or aggressive manner.

During the three-day initiative, troopers issued 231 traffic citations and 171 warnings. Of the 231 citations, 115 were for exceeding the posted speed limit. Of the 115 speeding citations, 60 were issued for speeds exceeding 85 mph.

Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division troopers conducted safety inspections on 124 commercial vehicles traveling on I-83. They placed 12 vehicles and eight drivers out-of-service for a variety of safety and regulation violations.

In addition, troopers charged six people for driving on a suspended license. One person was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

This initiative was a part of ongoing Maryland State Police efforts to impact traffic safety across the state. Special enforcement operations will be underway throughout the Memorial Day Weekend.
