A new release of internal Twitter correspondence details the relationship between the social media company and government agencies, including how the U.S. government "demanded" that the social media giant suspend nearly 250,000 accounts.

"US govt agency demanded suspension of 250K accounts, including journalists and Canadian officials!" Elon Musk replied to journalist Matt Taibbi's Twitter thread on Tuesday evening.

'Twitter Files' document connection to government agencies via 'belly button'

The latest drop of the Twitter Files , a series of releases provided by Elon Musk to allies detailing communications of the social media platform's leadership, offers insights into the company's relationship with the FBI . The company established regular communications and received requests from an assortment of agencies, according to emails released by journalist Matt Taibbi. These connections were better formed after the company clashed with the Global Engagement Center, a State Department-funded agency that regularly flagged Russian accounts in 2020 reports.

Twitter executives disputed the GEC's reports, saying they were flawed, and pressed for direct communications with other government agencies. This eventually led to the FBI becoming a "Belly button to the [United States government]" for Twitter, as agent Elvis Chan described the relationship to former Twitter Head of Trust and Safety Yoel Roth.

The decision to turn the FBI into that primary connection was made as several other agencies and entities chose to send Twitter accounts and tweets to review related to Russia-related and COVID-19 misinformation.

Rep. Adam Schiff's (D-CA) office, for example, asked Twitter to suspend a Twitter account operated by RealClearInvestigations's Paul Sperry.

Twittergate files: Hillary Clinton inspired a Democrat witch hunt against Twitter to look for Russian accounts that simply didn't exist – and forced the social media giant into the arms of the FBI

  • The latest Twitter files detail how the company was under pressure from Democrats and the media in 2017 to crack down on Russian propaganda
  • Executives had warned that Dems were focusing on Clinton's claims that Russian misinformation played a key role in her loss against Donald Trump
  • Twitter was soon forced to conduct its own investigation, with the findings repeatedly showing 'no evidence of a coordinated approach' from Russia
  • The internal investigations found only three accounts linked to the foreign nation, with two connected to a Russia-owned news network
  • Despite the findings, Twitter continued to face mounting pressure from Dems and the media that eventually led to its cooperation with the FBI

Twittergate files reveal CIA warned Twitter that book about Hunter Biden corruption was 'at least partially directed by Russian intelligence' – as FBI offered to become 'belly button' for intelligence demands to ban accounts

  • The Twitter Files revealed that the CIA sent warnings about a book claiming that Joe and Hunter Biden took part in corruption in Ukraine
  • In the book, ousted former Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin reiterated claims of the Bidens' alleged wrongdoing
  • It is unclear if Twitter took any action, with Shokin's claims being debunked amid intense scrutiny over the Bidens' supposed conflict-of-interests
  • The files also showed that former Head of Safety Yoel Roth sought to undermine the Trump administration's attempt to flag COVID misinformation
  • The internal memos reveal the FBI's willingness to serve as a funnel for intelligence agencies as Roth dubbed it 'apolitical'

Twitter Files: Company Exaggerated Russian Influence to Appease Media, Democrats

But after being slammed by Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) for an “inadequate” response to allegations of Russian meddling, Twitter’s public policy VP said the company should “keep producing material” on Russian interference to satisfy the Democrats. As a result, Twitter formed a “Russia Task Force,” to investigate Russian influence on the platform.

But the task force found little evidence of significant Russian involvement on the platform. In October 2017, the task force reported that it had found “no evidence of a coordinated approach, all of the accounts found seem to be lone-wolf type activity (different timing, spend, targeting, <$10k in ad spend).”

Pfizer Board Member Dr. Scott Gottlieb Pressured Company to Censor Donald Trump’s FDA Commissioner

The tweet from Dr. Giroir, who briefly headed the FDA after Gottlieb left, called on the White House to exempt people with natural immunity from taking the coronavirus jab.

“It’s now clear COVID-19 natural immunity is superior to vaccine immunity, by A LOT,” tweeted Giroir. “There’s no science justification for vax proof if a person had prior infection. [The CDC Director and the President] must follow the science. If no previous infection? Get vaccinated!”

Upon seeing the tweet, posted August 27, 2021, Gottlieb immediately emailed Twitter’s point of contact with the White House, Todd O’Boyle.

Via Unreported Truths:

Gottlieb stepped in, emailing Todd O’Boyle, a top lobbyist in Twitter’s Washington office who was also Twitter’s point of contact with the White House.
The post was “corrosive,” Gottlieb wrote. He worried it would “end up going viral and driving news coverage.”

As noted by Berenson, at the time of emailing, Gottlieb was already a board member at Pfizer:

By suggesting some people might not need Covid vaccinations, the tweet could raise questions about the shots. Besides being former FDA commissioner, a CNBC contributor, and a prominent voice on Covid public policy, Gottlieb was a senior board member at Pfizer, which depended on mRNA jabs for almost half its $81 billion in sales in 2021. Pfizer paid Gottlieb $365,000 for his work that year.

‘Russian Bots’ Were False

“Twitter warned politicians and media the[y] not only lacked evidence, but had evidence the accounts weren’t Russian – and were roundly ignored,” wrote journalist Matt Taibbi, who released the latest batch of the Twitter Files.

One prominent example highlighted by Taibbi is when former Congressman Devin Nunes submitted his classified memo to the House Intelligence Committee, exposing FBI abuses in using FISA courts to approve surveillance against individuals linked to Trump, and the critical role played by the discredited Steele Dossier.

Democrats including Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), along with Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) claimed that Russian bots were boosting the Nunes report through the hashtag “#ReleaseTheMemo.”

“We find it reprehensible that Russian agents have so eagerly manipulated innocent Americans,” wrote Blumenthal, in a letter to Jack Dorsey, then CEO of Twitter.

Devin Nunes rips top Democrats after ‘Twitter Files’ bombshell on Russia collusion: ‘Fools’

After warning of major flaws in the Trump-Russia collusion investigation in 2018, Truth Social CEO and former California Congressman Devin Nunes reacted to the latest "Twitter Files" release which validate his original concerns around top Democrats peddling a false Russian bot narrative.

"They should be embarrassed. They should be ashamed. It's the same people that were there in 2017 and 2018. They're still there today. They don't apologize. They look like fools, they are fools," Nunes said in an exclusive interview on "Mornings with Maria" Friday. "And hopefully, maybe someday they'll just wake up and be ashamed of themselves, and I don't know, just get a new job or something."

Nunes’ comments come just hours after journalist Matt Taibbi unveiled part 14 of the Twitter Files on Thursday, diving into the "Russiagate lies" and how he says a "fake tale of Russian bots" helped Democrats denounce the famous Nunes memo about flaws in the Trump-Russia investigation.

New Twitter Files reveal pharmaceutical industry lobbied social media over COVID vaccine content

"The push included direct pressure from Pfizer partner BioNTech to censor activists demanding low-cost generic vaccines for low-income countries," Fang wrote.

Twitter owner Elon Musk has been vocal about transparency when it comes to Twitter's past and present actions curating content on the platform, including censored content. He has enlisted independent journalists to slowly release evidence of these actions in a series dubbed the "Twitter Files" that continue to expose once-secret communications.

"But global drug giants saw the crisis as an opportunity for unprecedented profit. Behind closed doors, pharma launched a massive lobbying blitz to crush any effort to share patents/IP for new covid-related medicine, including therapeutics and vaccines," Fang wrote. "BIO, the lobby group that represents biopharma, including Moderna & Pfizer, wrote to the newly elected Biden admin, demanding the U.S. gov sanction any country attempting to violate patent rights and create generic low cost covid medicine or vaccines."

Fang then got into Twitter's involvement.

"The global lobbying blitz includes direct pressure on social media. BioNTech, which developed Pfizer's vaccine, reached out to Twitter to request that Twitter directly censor users tweeting at them to ask for generic low cost vaccines," Fang wrote to accompany an internal email.

Twitter Files #15 Blows up a Lot of Those 'Russian' Influence Claims From the Left

The Files point to “Hamilton 68,” a group that had an inordinate influence on media reports.

According to Taibbi, Hamilton 68 was:

a digital “dashboard” that claimed to track Russian influence and was the source of hundreds if not thousands of mainstream print and TV news stories in the Trump years. The “dashboard” was headed by former FBI counterintelligence official (and current MSNBC contributor) Clint Watts, and funded by a neoliberal think tank, the Alliance for Securing Democracy (ASD). The ASD advisory council includes neoconservative writer Bill Kristol, former Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul, ex-Hillary for America chief John Podesta, and former heads or deputy heads of the CIA, NSA, and the Department of Homeland Security.

Taibbi notes that they were cited as a source by virtually every major media outlet.

Left-wing think tank responsible for thousands of fake Russia stories: new Twitter Files

“I think we need to just call this out on the bulls–t is,” Twitter’s then-head of trust and safety Yoel Roth wrote in an October 2017 email. “Hamilton dashboard falsely accuses a bunch of legitimate right-leaning accounts of being Russian bots,” he added in January 2018.

Emails in the disclosure show that Twitter’s own internal audits repeatedly showed that accounts flagged by Hamilton 68 were not Russian bots.

“It was a scam. … Hamilton 68 simply collected a handful of mostly real, mostly American accounts, and described their organic conversations as Russian scheming,” wrote Matt Taibbi, who released the latest tranche of files Friday.

Hamilton 68’s pronouncements were used to allege a hidden Russian hand in US politics from hundreds, and possibly thousands, of news stories during the Trump years.

While Roth wanted to publicly push back against Hamilton 68, he was warned against taking on the politically connected group by Twitter’s then-head of global policy communication, Emily Horne.

Emails from Yael Roth revealed in the new Twitter Files.

From the left: Fearmongers’ Laughable Defense

Racket’s Matt Taibbi eviscerates Hamilton 68’s pathetic response to his Twitter Files exposé, which showed the group falsely treated hundreds of real Twitter users as Russian bots, prompting countless bogus “news” stories. Hamilton is pretending reporters simply misunderstood the research, but the outfit’s principals routinely did media hits claiming they were tracking “bots” and “never complained about all the headlines” like “The Russian Bots Are Coming.” Fact is, “the Hamilton 68 people” took “ordinary accounts with opinions [they] deemed to be in sync with Russia, and called them part of a ‘network’ that was ‘engaged with Russian propaganda.’” Then they “basked in every opportunity to speak on TV and to newspapers and at schools and think tanks and even congress, offering themselves as primary witnesses for a tale about ongoing ‘cyber attacks.’”
