We went with a rental at Allegro. Positive is, if we decide to purchase it all of our rental fees will be applied to the purchase price. Rent to own, without being screwed. Plus you want to make sure your child will stay with it.

we have multiple children after this one so we expect at least one to want to use it. also rent to own is about 800.00 dars after all is said and done.

I guess if you have multiple children that you are sure will come after then it might be worth it, but they too will eventually outrgrow the 1/2 size.

My daughter at age 8 was in beginning strings and was using a 1/4 size violin. By age 9 in intermediate strings she was using a 1/2 size, and this year at age 10 in advanced strings is now using a full size. We own the full size. They grow quick!

I use violinrentals.com and they have the rent to own option. Even if you upgrade to a larger size, you can still use the money you've been putting down as the rental towards the purchase.

I'm doing the rental option right now with allegro. My daughter is using a 1/2 size this year. This way if she decides she no longer wants to play, I'm not stuck with a violin.

yea we went to nanbos and got one today, rent to own option

I have bought both of my daughters violins from this site, very reasonable. The web site is Discount Musical Instruments - 2kool4skool
They have 1/2 size on sale for $99.95, I have a half and a 4/4 and no major problems, just the usual broken string. My oldest started with the 1/2 used 2 years then moved up to 4/4 and my youngest is now using the 1/2. Not professionally quality but perfect for beginner school, and if they lose interest your not out a fortune.

In My Opinion
I have a crappy 1/2 that no longer will stay tuned, then I have mine that I play.
I would NOT outright buy a 1/2, even if the child stays with it, they will outgrow it and you will end up having to buy a new one anyway.

oh, and 800.00 is not exactly expensive for a violin.

I bought my used from a guy who's kid decided he didnt want play anymore.
I paid 900.00 for it a few years back.
Its a Gliga, closest thing I see to it for sale now is the Maestro Vasile Gliga, but that one is 1800.00, so I either got a really good deal, or it looks like a really good model

of course, since the fingers fell off and got sewn back on it does not get used much anymore. Still wouldnt sell it.
