1 Chronicles 11:1 All Israel came together to David at Hebron and said, “We are your own flesh and blood. 2 In the past, even while Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns. And the Lord your God said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.’”
3 When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, he made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel, as the Lord had promised through Samuel.

Enduringword.com has some interesting information.
“It is significant that the chronicler makes no reference to the seven years in which David reigned over Judah. He begins with the crowning at Hebron, when all Israel acknowledged his kingship.” (Morgan)
This was actually David’s third anointing. The first was before his family and Samuel when David was very young (1 Samuel 16:1-13). The second was an anointing and recognition by the tribe of Judah after the death of Saul (2 Samuel 2:4). This third anointing was after the defeat of Ishbosheth, a son of Saul who claimed the right to the throne.

As I recall.... Ishbosheth's name was discussed in the earlier lists! I got this quote from "biblical-babynames.com".
Ishbosheth was the youngest and sole surviving son of Saul. He succeeded his father as the king of Israel and ruled for two years. He was succeeded by David. Ishbosheth belonged to the tribe of Benjamin. Ishbosheth is also known as Eshbaal in the Bible.
The Biblical baby name Eshbaal is Hebrew in origin and it's meaning is man of Baal. Baal was the supreme male diety of the Canaanites.
Eshbaal is pronounced esh-bah'-al.
Eshbaal was the fourth son of Saul, the first king of Israel. He is also called Ishbosheth in the Bible.
Biblical reference for baby name Eshbaal:
1 Chronicles 8:33; 9:39; 2 Samuel 2:8

Baal was the idol or statue worshiped in the promised land before the Israelites moved in. Molech was another statue worshiped.
So Saul's son was named "man of Baal". IMHO... that speaks volumes about how far Saul had wondered. But hey... what would we expect from a pretty boy from a good family who apparently doesn't have a clue about being loyal to the one true God of Abraham. So if all the people come together under David.... then they should all move away from Baal and toward God.
This was already pointed out in an earlier thread. I'm glad to see it again!
