1 Chronicles 14:1 Now Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedar logs, stonemasons and carpenters to build a palace for him. 2 And David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel and that his kingdom had been highly exalted for the sake of his people Israel.
3 In Jerusalem David took more wives and became the father of more sons and daughters. 4 These are the names of the children born to him there: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 5 Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, 6 Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, 7 Elishama, Beeliada[a] and Eliphelet.
David Defeats the Philistines
8 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, they went up in full force to search for him, but David heard about it and went out to meet them. 9 Now the Philistines had come and raided the Valley of Rephaim; 10 so David inquired of God: “Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?”
The Lord answered him, “Go, I will deliver them into your hands.”
11 So David and his men went up to Baal Perazim, and there he defeated them. He said, “As waters break out, God has broken out against my enemies by my hand.” So that place was called Baal Perazim.(b) 12 The Philistines had abandoned their gods there, and David gave orders to burn them in the fire.
13 Once more the Philistines raided the valley; 14 so David inquired of God again, and God answered him, “Do not go directly after them, but circle around them and attack them in front of the poplar trees. 15 As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the poplar trees, move out to battle, because that will mean God has gone out in front of you to strike the Philistine army.” 16 So David did as God commanded him, and they struck down the Philistine army, all the way from Gibeon to Gezer.
17 So David’s fame spread throughout every land, and the Lord made all the nations fear him.

b. 1 Chronicles 14:11 Baal Perazim means the lord who breaks out.
You know... I don't recall God giving David any advice when David took on Goliath. Goliath was a Philistine, and he was a giant with a big mouth. Of course, David wasn't king when Goliath was poking fun of God. Saul was king.... and as I recall, Saul never asked for advice from God on a regular basis.
The easy English site has a nice write-up this morning!
Many Bible teachers think that Hiram only became king of Tyre late in the rule of David in Israel. For most of the rule of David, Hiram’s father Abibaal was king of Tyre. This event was at the time that David became king of all Israel (2 Samuel 5:11-12). So, this was before Hiram became king of Tyre. But Hiram of Tyre helped David to build a palace at that time. As king of Tyre, he later helped Solomon with the temple (2 Chronicles chapter 2).
David knew that the LORD had made him king in order to help his people Israel. The LORD had given to David royal honour and authority. But David was king for the benefit of the people.
David already had wives and children before he came to Jerusalem. Now he took more wives and he had more children. Among the children born in Jerusalem was Solomon. If the names are in birth order then Solomon was the 10th son. But from that position, Solomon became the next king of Israel.
The Philistines heard that David was king of all Israel. They knew that soon David would have control of the Israelite armies. Then he would fight against the Philistines. So, they came to attack David. They wanted to defeat him before he could make Israel strong.
The Philistines came into the valley called Rephaim. This valley was to the south and west of Jerusalem. It was the boundary between the tribes of Benjamin and Judah.
David trusted God and he asked God for help. He asked for God’s advice whether to fight the Philistines or not. He wanted to know from God whether he would win. David obeyed God and he attacked the Philistines. With God’s help, he defeated them at Baal Perazim town. The name of that town means ‘the Lord who bursts out’.
People believed that the images of their gods would help them in battle. So the Philistine army took their gods with them. They thought that with their gods they would defeat David. But David, with the LORD’s help, was stronger than the gods of the Philistines. The Philistines ran away and they left their gods at Baal Perazim. David’s men collected these images of the gods and burned them. This is what God’s law ordered them to do (Deuteronomy 7:25).
The Philistines came again and they attacked the people in the valley. David again asked God what he should do. This time God told him not to attack them. God told David to go round behind the Philistines. David had to wait there for God’s signal. In the trees, there would be a sound like soldiers who are marching. That sound would show that God’s army of angels was marching with David’s army. Then David would defeat the Philistines.
The balsam tree is a tree with a sweet smell. Those were the trees in the forest where David’s army waited for God’s signal.
David obeyed God and he defeated the Philistine army again.
The battle went from Gibeon in Judah to Gezer on the border of the Philistine territory. So, David forced the Philistines out of the Israelite territory.
News of these battles reached all the countries round Israel. The LORD caused the people in all these countries to be afraid of David.

There are a couple of things here.... maybe I should have divided it.... but the points seem intertwined.
I enjoyed seeing the Philistines throw down their little idols and running. I also find it interesting that Deuteronomy calls for the Israelites to just burn the idols. It explicitly states....not to covet the gold and silver.....
Deuteronomy 7:25 The images of their gods you are to burn in the fire. Do not covet the silver and gold on them, and do not take it for yourselves, or you will be ensnared by it, for it is detestable to the Lord your God.
I got a new knife block this year for Christmas. I got tired of cutting myself on dull knives. But when it came time to donate the old block of knives.... I found myself picking out my favorite old dull tired knives and hiding them in a drawer. I was defeating my own purpose!!!! I allowed myself to donate the block and all its knives. My point is.... I was used to liking those knives even though they were no good for me.... there was always a chance they would do their jobs and I wouldn't get cut. But then again... we all love things that hurt us.... and God warned Israel to just burn up all those shiny little magpie traps.
The second point is the phrasing God used when He was describing how the attack would happen. He said, “As waters break out, God has broken out against my enemies by my hand.” I was watching AFV last night.... surprisingly it was one of the rare times that show didn't have one clip of a big above ground pool bursting. Have you seen an above ground pool burst? It'll knock you right off your feet and drag you a long way! A natural force, carried by a natural creation, can be used to cause a major disruption in anyone's plans.
In Arizona last year.... a complete family was washed away. They were playing in one of the natural pools that form along the washes. A flash flood happened miles up the wash.... but by the time the family heard or saw the raging run off..... it washed them all away. The rain water that couldn't break the surface tension of a dry hot desert became a raging river. When that happens, it'll take out an SUV, let alone a little group of humans playing in the water. As I recall, the father wasn't found until a day or so later. I was relieved to hear he had passed as well.... who would want to go through being swept away only to find out your entire family had perished.
God even gave David a timer! When David heard the wind in the trees rumbling... then David would know to attack. Come to think of it.... not everyone would have heard the warning in the trees.... David had circled back around the Philistines .... they might not have heard the sounds.... God is a real trickster... He knows how to use all that natural stuff He created.
