1 Chronicles 15:25 So David and the elders of Israel and the commanders of units of a thousand went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the house of Obed-Edom, with rejoicing. 26 Because God had helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, seven bulls and seven rams were sacrificed. 27 Now David was clothed in a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and as were the musicians, and Kenaniah, who was in charge of the singing of the choirs. David also wore a linen ephod. 28 So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouts, with the sounding of rams’ horns and trumpets, and of cymbals, and the playing of lyres and harps.
29 As the ark of the covenant of the Lord was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David dancing and celebrating, she despised him in her heart.

Michal, Saul's daughter, was David's first wife. He won her by collecting the foreskins of 100 Philistines. When Saul went insane, he ran David off and gave Michal to someone else. She actually helped David escape by lowering him out of a window in a basket. David got her back as a condition of becoming king of Judah, but it wasn't like a love story, as I recall, it was more like swapping valued possessions. There were never any children from this marriage.
This is from the easy English site.
David and the principal men of the nation went to get the ark from the home of Obed-Edom. They remembered how God had acted against Uzzah. Maybe they were afraid that God would act against them. But this time God helped the Levites. God allowed them to carry the ark. The Levite musicians led them all with songs of joy. They worshipped God and they made sacrifices to him. When the ark had gone 6 steps, David sacrificed a bull and a sheep (2 Samuel 6:13).
David and the Levites wore clothes of fine white linen. When the priests and Levites served the LORD, they had to wear special clothes. These clothes were of fine white linen. The white linen was to show that they were clean and holy. (‘Clean’ usually means ‘not dirty’ but often in the Bible it means ‘ready to worship God’.)
Saul’s daughter Michal was the first of David’s wives. She saw David as he danced. She saw him as he jumped for joy. Such behaviour was not what one would expect a king to do. Michal told David that he had disgusted her. David told her that he had danced to the LORD. And because of her attitude, she could not have children (2 Samuel 6:20-23).

Michal just didn't get it.... moving that Ark was a big deal. The Bible says... when the ark had moved 6 steps.... they sacrificed a bull and a sheep..... I get that.... The last time they tried to haul that box home.... it started to slide and Uzzah reached out to stop it from falling... and it killed him. David didn't want to lose anyone else to this project. Now the plan is to hoist this heavy gold laden box with it's two gold laden statues securely attached to the lid, on the shoulders of priests.
Recently we lost President Bush. Hubby and I are retired, so we had the good fortune of attending everything via television. Yep we watched everything that was broadcast.... and I was reminded of these verses when the Pallbearer Troops were carrying that coffin up and down all those steps. Every soldier had to step in unison. That stepping in unison with a heavy weight extremely difficult without hours and hours and hours of training. As the coffin was moving.... one soldier was responsible for keeping step and watching out for obstructions.
Now instead of having a somber caller keeping step under the box of a deadman.... the plan here was that David's troops were carrying a deadly box on their shoulders through the country side and into the busy streets of town. All that two part harmony David had arranged with the harps, lyres, and music.... was to count the beat so the men could stay in unison.... and was probably equally effective at keeping the soldiers minds occupied so they could endure the long march with that gold laden killer box on their shoulders. They had to carry that box for miles and miles on their shoulders.
Just taking six steps in unison and living to celebrate the feat was such a big deal... they stopped and made a thanksgiving sacrifice to God. They were happy they figured out the instructions. Yay!
I don't think Michal would have been happy about the victory of bringing the Ark home, period. She accused David of dancing half naked in front of everyone. Verse 27 says David wore a linen robe and an ephod. I have pictures of men dressed in linen robes and ephods... they are fully covered. Now when a man went to work... he would gird up his loins or [to put it in modern terms] tuck his long robe up in his belt so his legs were free to move.... maybe that's what she's referring to when she calls him half naked. I guess a king doesn't have to do any real labor since he's king.... and that's what she means.... [and there was a time when seeing a little ankle on a woman was a big deal so I can see how she might be agitated].... but really "half naked".... I think she was exaggerating.
Which one?
