1 Chronicles 25:1 David, together with the commanders of the army, set apart some of the sons of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun for the ministry of prophesying, accompanied by harps, lyres and cymbals. Here is the list of the men who performed this service:
2 From the sons of Asaph:
Zakkur, Joseph, Nethaniah and Asarelah. The sons of Asaph were under the supervision of Asaph, who prophesied under the king’s supervision.
3 As for Jeduthun, from his sons:
Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei,[a] Hashabiah and Mattithiah, six in all, under the supervision of their father Jeduthun, who prophesied, using the harp in thanking and praising the Lord.
4 As for Heman, from his sons:
Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shubael and Jerimoth; Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti and Romamti-Ezer; Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir and Mahazioth. 5 (All these were sons of Heman the king’s seer. They were given him through the promises of God to exalt him. God gave Heman fourteen sons and three daughters.)
6 All these men were under the supervision of their father for the music of the temple of the Lord, with cymbals, lyres and harps, for the ministry at the house of God.

a. 1 Chronicles 25:3 One Hebrew manuscript and some Septuagint manuscripts (see also verse 17); most Hebrew manuscripts do not have Shimei
This is from the easy English.
David organised the 288 musicians into 24 groups. These would work with the groups of priests and other Levites. The leaders of these groups came from the families of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun. About 30 years before, David had appointed these three men to be leaders of the music. That was when they brought the LORD’s ark to Jerusalem (16:4-7; 16:37; 16:41-42).
These three men would prophesy with harps, lyres, and cymbals. There are two possible meanings of the word ‘prophesy’ in this passage. They could have spoken words that God gave to them at that time. Or they could praise him with Psalms (songs of worship) that they (or somebody else) had written.
The leaders of the groups were the sons of Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman. Asaph had 4 sons and Jeduthun had 6 sons. Heman had 14 sons. These sons made the 24 leaders for the groups

So they could sing what God told them to sing.... [jam for God] or the could read music and play what was written.
This morning... Biblestudytools.com has a good commentary too!
to lift up the horn--that is, to blow loudly in the worship of God; or perhaps it means nothing more than that he presided over the wind instruments, as Jeduthun over the harp. Heman had been appointed at first to serve at Gibeon But his destination seems to have been changed at a subsequent period.
God gave to Heman fourteen sons and three daughters--The daughters are mentioned, solely because from their musical taste and talents they formed part of the choir ( Psalms 68:25 ).
All these were under the hands of their father--Asaph had four sons, Jeduthun six, and Heman fourteen, equal to twenty-four; making the musicians with their brethren the singers, an amount of two hundred eighty-eight. For, like the priests and Levites, they were divided into twenty-four courses of twelve men each, equal to two hundred eighty-eight, who served a week in rotation; and these, half of whom officiated every week with a proportionate number of assistants, were skilful and experienced musicians, capable of leading and instructing the general musical corps, which comprised no less than four thousand ( 1 Chronicles 23:5 ).

The daughters played the timbrels...
. So apparently these verses are describing yet another schedule.... there were 4000 members in the band. They could play the golden oldies.... either by reading the music or playing from memory.... or they could play what God led them to play too.... they'd be Jamming for God!
Can you imagine.... a Jam Session with 4000 musicians? Most bands [marching or otherwise] wouldn't number near that high. This is a huge undertaking. The practice sessions must have been eardrum bursting.
I wish I had known all the band stuff was in the Bible when I was teaching Sunday School. IMHO it would have inspired those kids!
Funny.... I've read through the Bible a couple of times.... and I was in churches, Sunday schools, vacation Bible study, women's Bible study.... and I never noticed these verses.... just another list.... now that I'm forced to read and post the commentaries.... I'm seeing new stuff.
I bet God's marching band would refuse to yield!
