Twenty-four persons are named in the beginning of this chapter as sons of those three great men, Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun. Ethan was the third, but probably he was dead before the establishment was perfected and Jeduthun came in his room. [Or perhaps Ethan and Jeduthun were two names for the same person.] Of these three Providence so ordered it that Asaph had four sons, Jeduthun six [only five are mentioned v. 3; Shimei, mentioned v. 17, is supposed to have been the sixth], and Heman fourteen, in all twenty-four, who were all qualified for the service and called to it. But the question was, In what order must they serve? This was determined by lot, to prevent strife for precedency, a sin which most easily besets many that otherwise are good people. The lot was thrown impartially. They were placed in twenty-four companies, twelve in a company, in two rows, twelve companies in a row, and so they cast lots, ward against ward, putting them all upon a level, small and great, teacher and scholar. They did not go according to their age, or according to their standing, or the degrees they had taken in the music-schools; but it was referred to God, v. 8. Small and great, teachers and scholars, stand alike before God, who goes not according to our rules of distinction and precedency. See Mt. 20:23 . God determined it as he pleased, taking account, it is probable, of the respective merits of the persons, which are of much more importance than seniority of age or priority of birth. Let us compare them with the preceding catalogue and we shall find that, 1. Josephus was the second son of Asaph. 2. Gedaliah the eldest son of Jeduthun. 3. Zaccur the eldest of Asaph. 4. Izri the second of Jeduthun. 5. Nethaniah the third of Asaph. 6. Bukkiah the eldest of Heman. 7. Jesharelah the youngest of Asaph. 8. Jeshaiah the third of Jeduthun. 9. Verse 21. - Mattithiah (see 1 Chronicles 15:18, 21). No other of these twenty-four names is found elsewhere out of this chapter in the history, a just indication of the trustworthiness rather than the contrary of this table.
Musicians didn't get a lot of attention in the commentaries. As a matter of fact... out of all the normal commentaries that come up... hardly any mention anything after verse 8. It's just a lottery drawing. I found it interesting that Biblehub picked Mattithiah out of the crowd.

This fact has aroused the suspicion of the critics regarding the genuineness of this entire list of names. “Now this sentence,” saith a critic, “is either an obscure and ancient prayer which hath been mistaken for a list of names by the compiler, or else the compiler has purposely strung together those significant names in such order as to form a sentence” (W.R. Harvey-Jellic). But it is not the mistake of the compiler or an invention. We read that God gave to Heman these sons and the pious Israelite named his sons so as to produce this meaning. There are many such messages in names throughout the Bible. (See annotations on Genesis 5.)

Everybody likes to find fault in the Bible. Sure... I get it... going through the translations can cause a distortion of the meaning of words by humans. I guess some people are selling the idea that reading certain translations of the Bible is like playing that child's game of "telephone". Kids would all sit in a circle... then the first kid thinks of a word or phrase and they whisper it to the next person in the circle... who whispers what they heard to the next person.... and so on and so forth until they get to the last person in the circle who says it out loud. It's hardly ever the same word or phrase. Is the hearing? Is it intentional?
Some of the interpretation is skewed too. Just take the Proverbs I've been reading over in another thread.... what would have happened if women stood up for themselves back in Solomon's day, like they are now? The man, according to the Bible, had 700 wives and 300 concubines... yet he's teaching monogamy? Times change and we have to understand the different circumstances of the time. Childbirth was the first priority. If you ask me... back in the days of David and Solomon.... women were to be seen and not heard.... and children had to be plentiful, male preferably, and not seen or heard.
As an old gray haired lady with an online Bible and some online commentary... I'm glad I know about the "Spirit". Since the "Spirit" is not visible to the naked [or corrected] eye.... it's a little hard to understand or describe. There's some stuff I read on the commentaries that just makes no sense at all. Then there's the stuff that is crystal clear. Generally the stuff that is crystal clear is in multiple commentaries... multiple witnesses.... and the nonsensical stuff is in only one... which lets me toss it...
I wonder now... how many people will toss my thoughts because I'm the only loony claiming that Solomon shouldn't be giving out advice on monogamy?
So getting back to the lottery.... According to the Bible... the schedule for the musicians was drawn by lot... experience, age, money, ability... had nothing to do with it.... some would say it's the "luck of the draw" or others would say it's "Divine intervention". Either way... this is another important document... the payroll and schedule for the musicians.
