Windows Search is the culprit.
Turn it off by getting a Command Prompt as Administrator, then type
net.exe stop "Windows search"
and hit Enter.
This will temporarily disable WS and you should see your disk usage go down.
To permanently disable, open your Local Services (search for services.msc). Scroll down to Windows Search and double-click. Change Startup Type to "disabled", then Apply and Okay.
*How to get a Command Prompt as Administrator:
Click the Windows icon in your menu bar.
Scroll down to Windows System and click to expand.
Right-click on Command Prompt and choose More-->Run as Administrator
*How to find out if your disk usage is high and slowing you down:
Ctrl-Alt-Delete
Choose Task Manager
Disk is the 3rd column
This is a known problem in Win 10, so you'd think they'd have fixed their crap by now with all the updates since they rolled it out almost 4 years ago. I've been plagued by pegged disk for a very long time and today it was so bad that I finally disabled WS. My laptop now runs so much faster.
