Five years later, Viagra eyes new uses

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- There may be more to Viagra than sex.

The iconic blue pill, launched five years ago this month, faces new competition from rivals that claim to act faster and last longer -- but the scientist who led its development says Viagra could have a new lease of life in quite different areas.

Ian Osterloh, based at Pfizer Inc's research center in England, is particularly excited about using the anti-impotence drug to treat pulmonary hypertension, an often deadly form of high blood pressure affecting the lungs.

Researchers are currently conducting a large, intermediate-stage, clinical study on the difficult-to-treat disease and will get a clearer picture on results in 2004.

My mother-in-law worked for a doctor's office and she was always bringing home free samples of all kinds of different medicine. One day, the hubby was making me a cup of coffee and looking for the Equal. He saw Viagra in the cabinet and was joking with his mother about it. A few days later, he tried it. I guess he took it around 8'ish in the evening. It wasn't until the next morning it affected him, he was at work. He had to sit at his desk for a majority of the morning.

A buddy of mine took it when he was 25 to try it. He was off of crack to hold down a good job, but was still "experimenting". Dunno about staying power, but was ready at any given moment for 3 days straight. He was stuck in his apartment all weekend. He had to miss a pool party at his apartment complex on top of his g'friend making him promise never to take the stuff ever again. I guess she missed a day also...side effect from him taking the viagra. ouch. :biggrin: True story.
