"In general, if anyone ever calls your home and out of the blue asks for your credit card information, don't give it to them.

Officials at the Department of Veterans Affairs are warning that a number of veterans have been contacted by scammers posing as VA workers, and asking for personal credit card information to "update prescription information."

It's not the first time veterans have been targeted in such scams, but with health care debates raising concerns it's a potentially convincing one. And it's a ploy that's infuriating the department and veterans service organizations.

"America’s veterans have become targets in an inexcusable scam that dishonors their service and misrepresents the Department built for them," Dr. Gerald Cross, VA’s Under Secretary for Health, said in a statement last night. "The VA simply does not call veterans and ask them to disclose personal financial information over the phone."

VA officials confirmed that there have been no recent changes in how prescriptions are dispensed. Any veteran who has questions about the process, their account or any suspicious calls should contact the VA directly before giving out any personal information, especially credit card numbers."
