SCHOOL 1957 vs. 2007



Scenario: Jack goes quail hunting before school, pulls into school
parking lot with shotgun in gun rack.

1957 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his
car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.

2007 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail
and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for
traumatized students and teachers.

1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark win s. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up
best friends. Nobody goes to jail, nobody arrested, nobody expelled.

2007 - Police called, SWAT team arrives, arrests Johnny and Mark. Charge
them with assault, both expelled even though Johnny started it.

ADD. School gets extra money from state because Jeffrey has a
disability.

him a whipping with his belt.

1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to
college, and becomes a successful business man.

2007 - Billy's Dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy removed to foster
care and joins a gang. State psychologist tells Billy's sister that she
remembers being abused herself and their Dad goes to prison. Billy's mom
has affair with psychologist.

1957 - Mark shares aspirin with Principal out on the smoking dock.

2007 - Police called, Mark expelled from school for drug violations. Car
searched for drugs and weapons.

1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English, goes to college.

2007 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear
nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for
graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English banned from core
curriculum. Pedro given diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a
living because he cannot speak English.

puts them in a model airplane paint bottle, blows up a red ant bed.

1957 - Ants die.

2007 - Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Homeland Security and
FBI called. Johnny charged with domestic terrorism, FBI investigates
parents, siblings removed from home, computers confiscated, Johnny's Dad
goes on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

He is found crying by his teacher, Heather. Heather hugs him to comfort
him.

1957 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and go es on playing.

2007 - Heather is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job.
She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.

It took me twenty minutes to figure out why he was concerned.

I had to call him back when the bell finally went off in my head.

We wonder why the jails are crowded...its because every silly thing is illegal

I was thinking about it though. In maryland for example, you are not allowed to carry a concealed handgun without a permit obviously, but how about toting a larger gun like a shotgun or rifle around? Can you put a shoulder strap on your remington and walk into walmart with it on? As far as I see it, you need no permit to own or carry it...but I suppose walmart might have a personal policy against firearms?? Never heard of it though lol

How many kids shot up their school in the 50s? I don't recall any.

How many students in the 50s actually had learning disabilities and dropped out of school because there was no help available? Thousands.

How many kids were actually beaten half to death by parents who were never prosecuted? More than are wrongly prosecuted today.

How many kids were using or selling drugs while in school? Nowhere near the number we have today.

How many ESOL students managed to get to college? Few and far between.


Comparing then vs now is comparing apples and oranges. World is different, societies change, some things for the better, some things for the worse....

About the over crowded jails. I don't think that "more laws" are the cause of more people being in jail today versus the 50's. I think it is a lack of punishment. Criminals today know they will get off a lot easier today or be charged with a lesser sentence then they might have 50 years ago. Think about the number of violent criminals who would never have gotten out of prison from committing a crime in the 50's versus someone raping or killing someone today.

About carrying the weapons as you mention. Carrying concealed is just that, concealing the weapon on your person. Maryland also does not permit "open carry" which is that you have described. You could be arrested and charged with brandishing a weapon and an array of other charges if you try walking into WalMart with your shotgun on your shoulder. Maryland is tighter on weapon carry then almost any other state in the union with two exceptions that I know about [DC and Hawaii]-that's one of the main reasons I left...

What does any of this stuff you mention have to do with the original post? No one suggested we go back in time and give up any of these things you mention. This was just a simple comparison to reflect on how bad some thing have gotten in this crazy world. Sure, microwaves and online bill payment are good but what does that have to do with the comparison put forth in the original post. From your logic, I can only assume you swing a little to the liberal side. Flawed logic. Sorry, just my observation.
