2.6-magnitude earthquake recorded off coast of Assateague Island

ASSATEAGUE ISLAND NATIONAL SEASHORE - A minor 2.6 magnitude earthquake was recorded off the coast of Assateague Island near the Maryland and Virginia line.

The quake was reported at 8:21 p.m. Wednesday.

The United States Geological Survey said it hit about 18 miles from Greenbackville, Virginia at a depth of about seven miles.

Minor quakes like these can often go unfelt and typically will only cause minor damage.
