2 Chronicles 21:1 Then Jehoshaphat rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the City of David. And Jehoram his son succeeded him as king. 2 Jehoram’s brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat, were Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariahu, Michael and Shephatiah. All these were sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel.[a] 3 Their father had given them many gifts of silver and gold and articles of value, as well as fortified cities in Judah, but he had given the kingdom to Jehoram because he was his firstborn son.
4 When Jehoram established himself firmly over his father’s kingdom, he put all his brothers to the sword along with some of the officials of Israel. 5 Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. 6 He followed the ways of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for he married a daughter of Ahab. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord.7 Nevertheless, because of the covenant the Lord had made with David, the Lord was not willing to destroy the house of David. He had promised to maintain a lamp for him and his descendants forever.
8 In the time of Jehoram, Edom rebelled against Judah and set up its own king.9 So Jehoram went there with his officers and all his chariots. The Edomites surrounded him and his chariot commanders, but he rose up and broke through by night. 10 To this day Edom has been in rebellion against Judah.
The pendulum has been swinging back and forth, good and evil, all the way through the Bible. Jehoshaphat was a good man. Then the pendulum swings and Jehoram, Jehoshaphat's son, is a bad man. Now... God made a promise to David.... who really did his very best in spite of the turmoil that swarmed around Bathsheba and Tamar. God knew that things would not go swimmingly for David's predecessors. God knew how it would turn out. God controls time... and He knows the end before the beginning begins for us. So God had to put up with Jehoram's crap. Interesting.... Jerhoram's crap is a lesson on what not to do.Jehoshaphat gave his son a rich throne and a hot wife. Jehoram's wife was the daughter of none other than Jezebel.... one of the most famous vixens of the Bible. Now, Jehoram seems to be the exact opposite of Jehoshaphat.... how likely do you think Jezebel's daughter was a good girl? Not much huh.....
The first thing I learn about this rich boy with a hot wife.... he murdered all his competition. He killed all his brothers and some of the leaders..... I'd say he's a little insecure.... funny.... isn't that what they say about most rich men with an evil hot wife? Spoiled brat!!! But God made a promise to David..... boy this should prove God keeps His Word.
I preached enough..... here's the easy English site.
Jehoshaphat died in 849 BC and they buried him in David’s city. Jehoram, his son replaced him as king. He was 32 years old when he became the king. He ruled for 8 years in Jerusalem. But he had joined in the rule of his father about 8 years earlier. Joram had become king of Israel in the second year of Jehoram’s rule (2 Kings 1:17). That was in the 18th year of Jehoshaphat’s rule (2 Kings 3:1).
Jehoshaphat had 7 sons. He gave to each son strong cities and many precious things. He left Jehoram in Jerusalem in control of the kingdom. Jehoram had shared the rule with Jehoshaphat for some years. So, there should have been no competition for the role of king. But as soon as he had control, Jehoram killed his brothers. Also, he killed some of the leaders of Judah.
Jehoram was not a good king like his father. He followed the ways of Ahab. His wife Athaliah was the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel. When he made an agreement with Ahab, Jehoshaphat had arranged the marriage of Jehoram and Athaliah.
The LORD did not destroy Judah because of his promise to David.
The nation called Edom was south and to the east of the Dead Sea. Since the time when David ruled, Edom depended on Israel and then on Judah. There were some internal troubles in Edom and the king of Edom died. Then the people in Edom chose their own king. He decided to free Edom from the rule of Judah.
Jehoram took his army to fight against Edom. After a long and hard day, the army stopped for a night near a town called Zair (2 Kings 8:21). Jehoram and the chariot officers were in a separate camp from the rest of the army. It seems that the guards did not do their job very well. During the night the army of Edom got to the camp of Jehoram and the chariot officers. But Jehoram and the chariot officers were able to get past the army of Edom.
The rest of Jehoram’s army ran away. They went back home. Jehoram could not make Edom obey him again. At the same time, the people in Libnah city got free from the rule of Judah. Libnah was a city to the south and west of Judah.
I guess having such miserable great great whatever grandparents like Jehoram and Athaliah builds character into the Christ Himself. All this garbage was in the DNA of the family of Christ. With that background.... Christ didn't have to be a goody two shoes.... Christ could be a lot worst than Jehoram ever dreamed.
