"Pls forward...poor old dogs...somebody out there might have
extra room and a big heart for these poor souls.......

There are 2 senior dogs at Frederick Co. Animal Control who
we're trying to find a rescue for. They're just not doing well at the
shelter and they're difficult to place because A. they're older and B.
they have to stay together. They've been together their whole lives and
Joe howls and gets frantic even when they are separated temporarily.
Here is thier info. and links to their bios. They ended up at the
shelter because their male owner died and their female owner is starting
a new life that doesn't include them. If you have space and can take
these guys, please let me know.
Maggie, 12 year old Chow Mix
Joe, 10 year old Cattle dog mix

UPDATE: Will wonders never cease?! Another volunteer and I took
both Joe and Maggie up front to our foyer area to be 'greeters' and
'Dogs of the Day' on Saturday. They perked right up, and greeted each
and every visitor to the shelter, from babies to young children to
teenagers to adults and the frail elderly. They were perfectly behaved,
happy to receive all the attention and pets! These sweethearts need
people to thrive, not a concrete kennel with lots of other sometimes
noisy dogs barking! I brought along a grooming brush and comb too, and
took advantage of the time to give them a thorough going over. They
could both use consistent, high quality nutrition, as their coats are
very dry. Even after the first bag, you'd notice a difference. They
could use a good bath too, and some general TLC. They are looking much
brighter and sleeker now though! They were both so good - allowing me to
gently comb, then brush them top to bottom (and for multiple times)
without complaint. When we went outside for a potty break, they both
walk very well on their leashes, no pulling. These two are gems - such
good kids who've had a tough break. Do come and take them home with you,
they are NO TROUBLE at all!

Sadly, once back in their run and they realized they were not
home, Maggie went back to her corner and Joe took up his place beside
her. They would positively blossom if they could be where they
belong....HOME!.

UPDATE 12/21/07

Hi Santa, this is Joe (black cattle dog mix)

Remember me? I am the one Maggie always looked out for because
she knows how sensitive I am. She has always been there for me, no
matter how tough things got for us.

We were put here when our favorite family member died. It was
all such a blur. Maggie (chow mix) promised me that everything would be
ok and she would make it better...she always made it better because she
knows how shy I am around strangers.

Maggie doesn't smile anymore and she doesn't want to get up some
days because she is so sad. Even though I'm scared, I sit next to Maggie
and try to cheer her up. I'm trying to do for Maggie what she always did
for me.

We didn't do anything wrong. We just want to be with people and
watch tv and play in the yard a little...but mostly we want be HOME
where someone loves us.

The folks here at the shelter try to reassure us, but I'm so
scared that no one is listening or cares that we are here.

Please Santa...please help me help Maggie smile again. Please
tell people we are here. Please tell them we are a team. We have been
through so much together, please help us through this?

Thank you

Joe

WHAT A SWEET PAIR!

Meet Maggie (chow mix) and Joe (cattle dog mix). They are 10 and
11 years old.

They came to us because of a death in the family. Right now,
because they don't understand why they are here, they run to the front
when they hear someone come, and look to see if it wasn't some mistake
and their family is coming to get them. When they see their family is
not there, they go back and lay down and wait.

Joe (cattle dog mix) is quite overwhelmed and is very dependent
on his friend Maggie. He is a little shy, but has been responding to our
care. He would not do well without Maggie, and we feel she would miss him
as well.

Maggie (chow mix) is more outgoing and self assured. I have a
photo of her smiling if someone wants to see it...she seems to know that
she is Joe's support and looks back to be sure he is ok if he goes into
the other run. It's very sweet to see their relationship.

Both seem healthy and I haven't seen them make much noise at
all. They love being petted and cuddled. They have a pleasing activity
level and both indicated they would like to spend quiet time at home
watching the Redskins try to win a game or two..

Adopting 2 dogs that are already bonded has more benefits than
you might imagine. We want this pair to go together if at all possible.
They have good, happy years left to both give and receive love. Their
world has been turned upside down. Will you make it right-side-up again
for them?

This is the season to reach out. Maggie and Joe have been left
behind. Please consider this striking pair to be members of your
household.

Please call the shelter to check on the availability of any
animal at (301) 600-1546. Animal visiting hours are as follows:

Mon, Tue, and Fri: 10:00am-5:00pm
Wed and Thu: 10:00am-8:00pm (our late evening hours)
Sat: 10:00am-4:00pm"

When I read their story it brought tears to my eyes. After I found their link on petfinder Adopt Best FriendsURGENT - Cattle Dog, Chow Chow Dog [Mix] I thought about it and discussed it with my husband, but we dont think it would be the best for us. Since November we have put down two dogs and 1 cat and it hard to explain to our 2 year old son why our animals arent coming home. If we adopted senior dogs, they too would probably pass within a few years and while we already have two senior dogs now, we dont think it would be best that if we added two more. I really pray that someone can open thier doors and hearts to these two.

I know, I would love to adopt them also..I am on the road quite a bit & so I don't know how I could handle it. I would think a retired person, a middle aged couple or young senior would be a perfect fit for these two sweeties. These babies obviously need to be together. It's such a shame, as they seem very well mannered and loving. Spread to word and perhaps the more the word is spread, someone will be able to give them a new home.:smoochy:

I dont know for sure, but I would guess no. They are at the Frederick County Animal Shelter and their web page is very similar to ours (tri-county animal shelter).

Great Great News!!!!!

I went to click on my link i posted in my previous post (to go on petfinders) and this is what is on their page!!!!!:yahoo:

Update: 2/09/08

Joe and Maggie were adopted together and went to their new home today!

After several news articles, being on television (Channel 9 news), Petfinder, Making Friends...and just plain hard work, someone saw their beauty and opened their home to them.

They will be living on a 6 acre farm, with two acres fenced off just for the dogs. The lady who adopted them made it clear she wants them to be in her room at night and is trying to look ahead to make it as easy as possible for Maggie to get around. It won't be hard...Maggie is quite capable. They will also be living with 2 cats and another beagle/corgie mix. The introductions at the shelter between the 3 dogs went very well.

Joe and Maggie knew something was up when we were taking them out after everyone gave them a goodbye hug. Maggie started "talking" and Joe seemed to know exactly which car was taking them to their home. Both popped into the car immediately and Joe looked like Rin-Tin-Tin as he took his place next to Maggie in the back with his paws on the center console. This pair was READY! There is no place like home.

Thanks to everyone who helped get the word out about this great pair. I always say, and will continue to say, that the best people on the planet come through our front doors...adopters, rescuers, and people who want to help.

This was a community effort...thank you all!

I wanna be a SMIB
I just read this story and the beginning brought tears of sadness but then I kept reading and at the end there were tears of happiness. Hooray for them both, I hope they live long and happy in their new home.
