DRAFT TIPS

DON’T WASTE MONEY ON MAGAZINES
Too many of them base their rankings too much on the year before
They rate too many players, nobody cares about the 140th ranked WR
They cost money and there are many websites you can look at for free
They base it off of what a player is expected to do, which is a good thing
They compare what a RB is expected to do to what a QB is expected to do, which is a bad thing
My rankings are based over the person’s career specifically focused on the last 5 years
My rankings are free
I use a tier system which compares RBs to RBs, QBs to QBs, and so on. The difference is that a mid to low second string RB is not much better than an early to mid third string RB. A top first QB is a lot better to have than even a mid first string QB.

GET STEADY PLAYERS, AVOID HAVING TO PLAY MATCHUPS
Getting a steady performer is better than having two guys that you have to decide on each week. It gives you more room to work with and you don’t have to get the backups as fast. You can’t avoid it for your 3rd WR and backups, but you can for almost all starters.

DON’T GET A BACKUP FOR YOUR TE, K, AND DST
Instead, get a TE, K, and DST with different bye weeks. Get a backup for whichever position has the first bye then drop him and add for whichever position has the next bye week. This will leave roster space for your risky picks or for when your WRs have bye weeks, then you can get an extra backup WR and play whoever has the best matchup.

DON’T DRAFT A TE TOO EARLY
Only the best TEs should be drafted before your second WR. The difference between the 6th TE and 18th TE isn’t near as much as the difference between the 13th WR and the 24th WR.

DON’T DRAFT A DST TOO EARLY
Only the top defenses should be drafted before you have a backup WR, RB, AND QB.

DON’T DRAFT A KICKER TOO EARLY
Kickers don’t make a big enough difference. You should have all positions filled and 1-2 backups at the key positions first.

DON’T COUNT ON BEING ABLE TO TRADE
People are too paranoid that they are getting shafted and trades don’t happen much in FF. Getting the top 3 WRs in hopes that you can trade one of them for a top RB is not a good idea.

ROB THE BYE WEEKS
Weeks 6 and 8 have 6 teams on a bye each. If you avoid drafting players with byes those weeks, it’s all of your starters against a team playing with backups.

FORFIET THE BYE WEEKS
There are 12 teams to choose from with byes in weeks 6 and 8 that will get you the title. Losing two games still gets you into the playoffs and to the gold. There are a lot of key players to choose from in these two bye weeks.

AVOID INJURY PRONE PLAYERS
There’s nothing like having McNabb get you to the playoffs and getting injured before your big game.

AVOID RETIRED PLAYERS
Keyshawn Johnson is the only retired guy worth drafting AS A RISK, as in when you already have 5 WRs.

HAVE FUN
That’s it, have fun.

Rds 1-3

Alright I am basing this draft as if there were 12 teams, 15 rds, and in a league where you start 1QB, 2RB, 3WR, 1TE, 1K, 1DST. That is how pretty much all standard free leagues are.

POS TIER LAST FIRST TEAM BYE

RB 1 Johnson Larry KC 8
QB 1 Manning Peyton IND 6
QB 1 Brady Tom NE 10

That is the beauty of FF, we can all have different opinions on where to place players per tier. IMO, some of your tiers are a little off but like I said, that is what makes it fun.

When I got done with the QBs and looked at the list I thought I was crazy for putting Eli Manning so high and double checked it, but last year he was 11th in yards and tied for fourth most TDs (among QBs), in 2005 he was 5th in yards and tied for 4th in TDs, and in 2004 he was a rookie. The guy is a very safe bet this year even if he does throw more picks than most peaople like.

After 2 weeks of the preseason here are some updates as you head into your drafts.

It doesn't look like Rueben Droughns was brought in to share time with Brandon Jacobs.

Dallas looks like it will repeat with Julius Jones Running and Marion Barber scoring.

Calvin Johnson might not start but could still score on some bombs.

Minnesota had Chester Taylor starting in week 1 and Adrian Peterson starting in week 2. Peterson had a 43 yarder and his 7 other rushes totaled 27 yards (3.9 avg).

Brandon Jackson has been the starter both weeks for Green Bay without Vernand Morency's presence. Morency is still listed as the starter.

Jeff Garcia looked better this week with limited touches.

Garrard is looking good during preseason and should be a late pick "if" Leftwich gets injured.

Reggie Bush got in the game earlier this week but Duece McAlister is still the starter. Bush should still be picked over McAlister.

DeShaun Foster is also still the starter over DeAngelo Williams and is seeing more time than McAlister is in NO.

Jerious Norwood is listed as the starter in the ATL. Michael Vick is not a good pick this year.

Travis Henry looks to be the definite starter in Denver and won't be sharing time. With Denver's rushing history, Henry should be taken in the first or second round.

Brodie Croyle started in week 1 and Damon Huard started in week 2. Look for the Chiefs to play Michael Bennett during the Larry Johnson holdout. If Priest Holmes returns, look for him to be the starter. Holmes has had 4 1000+ yard seasons and was on pace for another when he was sidelined in 2005.

Daunte Culpepper is giving Andrew Walter a run for his money as the starter in Oakland. Look for Culpepper to be the starter at the beginning of the season. An injury prone QB behind a high school line isn't a good idea though.

Fred Taylor is still the starter over Maurice Jones Drew but back to back injury free seasons are not likely.

Chris Brown started in week 1 and Chris Henry started in week 2 for the Titans. Brown is listed as the starter and wil likely remain there. Henry's start in week 2 was likely to push Brown harder.

Anthony Thomas and Marshawn Lynch have both had a start also. Lynch is looking good but Thomas is still listed as the starter. An update will be given after week 3.

Kevan Borlow doesn't appear to be sharing any time with Willie Parker in Pittsburgh.

Charlie Frye started in week 1, Derek Anderson started in week 2, and Brady Quinn looked like he was worth the trade up. Look for Quinn to be the starter by the end of the season if not sooner.

Another update is on the way next week.

Randle El has already proven unfantasyworthy and Jacoby Jones is a rookie and not a starter. If you really want Matt Schaub, drop both of those WRs and get Hackett and Schaub. I hope you have two stud RBs because your lineup doesn't sound so good.

This was the outcome of auto draft.

Jets OL is decimated, I don't think Pennington is going to have a lot of time for passing.

The Jets line won't be as bad as the Texans or Raiders last year. If David Carr could put up decent numbers last year wothout RB help and only 1 real go to guy (Johnson), then Pennington can do it with Thomas Jones, Jericho Cotchery, and Laverneous Coles. Schaub looked good in preseason but so did every Browns QB. I'm guessing you took Reggie Bush as your first rounder?

I would say you definitely did good. Just a recommendation, drop Jordan for a WR that doesn't have a bye in weeks 5, 7, or 9. You also don't have a backup TE for week 7, and then you have a K and D with byes in week 8. I do think you have an awesome lineup but you have a couple weeks where you have a guy off.
