2011 GM Diesels now run on pee (sorta)

To ensure that the exhaust fluid tank is refilled, Duramax-equipped trucks will warn the driver when the fluid is down to a 1,000-mile range. A series of start-up warnings -- including lights, chimes and messages -- will become more frequent until the tank is empty. If the driver continues to operate the truck with a dry tank, after a final warning and restart the truck will only operate in a “limp-home” mode that limits speed to just 5 mph until the tank is refilled.
The tank they are referring to is the Urea tank, the Urea is injected into the exhaust and when it hits the CAT it breaks the exhaust down to environmentally friendly elements.
Good idea.
However, I dont see this Urea being sold in too many places so one will be subjected to the abuse of the stealership until stations add and additional tank to hold the Urea, and an addtional pump to dispense.

I dont like the idea of having the truck go into the limp mode and restricting travel to 5mph once the tank runs empty, it seems as if this could end up being a safety issue while driving home on that 50mph road at 5mph.. I expect it will require a towing should this happen to you. and with the limited resources for purchasing the product right now, I can see this as a problem when on the road.

Im not sure but I think that the Dodge and also Ford are either doing it as of 2011 or have it in the plans for 2012.

I would like to have the new 2011 due to the looks and the additional HP that the engine is now delevering, however I think it wise to wait until the Urea is more readily available.

The one thing I have not discovered yet is how the sensor works in the tank.
If it looks for specific chemical properties, you wont be able to fool it, but if it is only a level guage, you should be able to get away with just adding distilled water and go on your way. (I suspect that actually peeing into the tank could cause some unwanted exhaust smells for those behind you)

Not funny.
who in their right mind is going to spend 60k on a truck that you have to pee in to make it go?

I'm getting visions of many accidents on the beltway as guys are filling up their tanks. I see more accidents if it's a woman.

They are selling a special fill device for the women.

Don't expect to see a home refill kit for this, urea nitrate can be substituted for ammonium nitrate in making ANFO explosives.

What I am hoping for is a ECM delete for this.
Just like when they came out with the DPF, was a short time and someone programmed the ECM not to notice that the DPF was suddenly unplugged once the DPF delete was programmed.

These engineers are really testing the ability of the at home ECM programmers.

Didn't understand a word you said as my Geo Metro has none of that crap. I remember being able to turn your distributor slightly to tune the motor up.

Yea, well,, you dont have to pee in it either to make it go.

least they could do would be to add some health diagnostics to the DIC so that the ECM could monitor your pee and warn you about health issues through the DIC.

By the way.
ECM = Engine Control Module
TCM = Transmission Control Module
DIC = Driver Information Center
DPF = Diesel Particulate Filter
EGT = Exhaust Gas Temperature

Thanks. I had come up with my own but none were the same as yours.

looks like you will be screwed if you live in the midwest right now.
I wonder if you will be able to buy it in gallons so you can refill should you need to when there is no distribution around you on trips.

Yes, it looks in the future there will be two pumps side by side..

Where-ever there is a Diesel tank there will be an Urea tank, BUT that being said Urea is used at 5% the rate of the diesel. Every 20 gallons of diesel you need you'll need 1 gallon of Urea.

Im still going to wait until the pumps are in place as a common thing.
I went this week and looked at a new 2011 dually set up just like my 06.
List on it was 64k, quick talking to them got it down to 57 and change and they wanted to give me 28k for mine.. (Who the F would pay 28k for a truck with almost 100k miles on it that has been used mostly on highway with heavy weight behind it.) at any rate, I figured that I would put maybe 5k down and it would be doable.

but, that Urea thing turned me off for right now.

I bet it does help keep the EGTs down though.

EGT definition added to list for the benefit of others.

Couple of places on line that package it in one or 5 gallons jugs..
