2003 Ford Explorer - loud whining noise from rear drive line around 55-70 mph

Does anyone out there who owns a 2003 Explorer have this problem? I've been told that Ford has been aware of this problem for at lease 6 months and still haven't come up with a fix. The local dealers have confirmed that quite a few people have complained about this...

Havent heard anything but will keep my eyes and ears open.

My guess would be some harmonic resonance created by driveline slack or from the differential since it is only at certain speeds.

I'm a Ford Girl through and through, but... let me tell ya... I had 1998 Ford Escort Sport ZX2 which I brought brand spankin' new back in the day and kept up all the maintenance on.... however October of 2002 she went in the shop where she stayed at a Ford dealer for 6 months for them to not be able to figure out what was wrong, so.. what did I do?.. I traded that sucker in and brought another Ford, but as I said, I'm a Ford girl. Anyway next story... My Aunt and Uncle brought a brand new Ford Explorer last year only to have it in the shop right away because the nice folks in Michigan left a socket in the engine!!!!!!!!:yikes: What's that loud knocking you say? A socket?!!!! lol... Anyway they replaced the engine only to have more drama and replaced the engine again and now all is well. Moral of the story... Take the sucker to somebody other the a Ford dealership to fix! Call me a glutten for punishment:bonk: , but I love my new little ford car.... Just take it somewhere else for a second opinion....

Sounds like a ring/pinion issue like Dodges are having right now. Don't want that to snap on you as the rear end can lock causing a flip-over or expensive rear-end damge. No XXX puns intended.

Is there a documented case of a Dodge flipping over due to this problem? Can you provide a link to this info for Dodges? Thanks.

Whenever I hear a whining noise from the back I warn them to knock it off or we'll turn around and go home! Of course, I drive Chevys and have never had a drive train problem. Rust, yes.

I'm going by a co-workers complaints about his 1999 Dodge Ram 1500. His was making a horrible whining noise. He's supposed to take it to the dealer to get some recall taken care of. I'll ask him when I see him next regarding exact recall info.
