I've been reading a thumbnail book about world history - Mental Floss' History of the World, to be exact.
Anyway, looking back through all of the conflicts, government failures, and regime changes throughout history, almost none of them came about because of voting some politician in or out of office. Typically things got bad enough that the citizens staged a revolt and heads rolled. Or some other leader type person came along and slaughtered the existing leadership.
We've been fighting over land, religion, money, power, etc, since time began. And it usually ends with a bunch of dead people and a conquered nation.
So maybe it's inevitable that we are taken over by some hostile force. Maybe 100 years from now, the US will cease to exist and we'll be a Chinese or Muslim territory. And maybe in 1,000 years, our descendants will be reading about us like we read about the Roman Empire.
I have nothing terribly insightful or profound to say, but it struck me how things never change - even over a span of several thousand years.
