The existence of the woman, believed missing since 1984 and now 42, emerged apparently after a teenage child fell ill and had to be taken to hospital.

Both the woman and teenage girl are receiving medical treatment and the other children are in care. "

Austrian 'admits daughter abuse'

"Police said Josef Fritzl also admitted burning the body of a baby that died at the house in Amstetten, Lower Austria.

Mr Fritzl has been taken to court while authorities are caring for the woman, now 42, and her six surviving children.

Photos of the man's basement show a concealed network of tiny windowless chambers which were soundproofed.

Prosecutors say Mr Fritzl is expected to be taken into protective custody after appearing before a magistrate.

The woman, Elisabeth, disappeared aged 18 on 28 August 1984 when, according to her testimony to police, her father lured her into the cellar, drugging and handcuffing her before locking her up.

She is reported to have been made to write a letter which made it look as if she had run away."

Disgusting and depraved. What an awful stigma for these children to have to face. They'll have trouble adjusting to everyday things as well - they've never even seen daylight. So sad and pathetic.

This raises a very difficult question that I'm sure nobody wants to ask...

Should these kids be "taken out of the gene pool"? Should they either be made to not reproduce OR anything more, like end them of their (possible) misery in being offspring of family members?

Just a thought. I mean, does one generation of incest ruin their portion of the gene pool, or would it have taken multiple generations to have any impact?

Not that I am for incest but to "end" them or the possibility of them reproducing?

We'd have to kill off most of Appalachia then.
