25 pin to USB

I have a HP LaserJet 2100M with 25pin connector. I bought a 25 pin to usb connector as there is no 25 pin female on my pc. The dang thing won't print consistently. It was working sometimes, then would quit, then would print what I wanted when I rebooted, then quit. Now I can't seem to get it to work at all.

One of the things I can't figure out is if it is the port that it is picking when it auto-installs? I presume I need it to be usb and not local printer, but which usb? 001, 002, etc.?

Also, sometimes if I unattach and reattache it will install again...but as a new printer. I have a disc that came with the convertor cord, but what do I do with it? XP auto installs the printer...sometimes...

I promised myself I'd figure this out this year, thanks for any help!!

I think I am just going to buy a parallel card slot and be done with it. What do I need to look out for here?
