Jesus Sends Out the Twelve

Luke 9:1 When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 3 He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt. 4 Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. 5 If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” 6 So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.

7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed because some were saying that John had been raised from the dead, 8 others that Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life. 9 But Herod said, “I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things about?” And he tried to see him.

I don't know how many times I have read the Bible verses or how many times I have sat in church listening and learning. I never saw verses 7-9 before.

Herod, as you should recall, had John the Baptist jailed because John told it like it was. He condemned Herod the tetrarch for sleeping with his brother's wife so she insisted that John be jailed because she was insulted. Then her daughter danced for Herod and he was so lusty he told her he would give her anything. She told him she wanted John's head on a platter. Since others heard him offer her anything, he had to go through with it or risk looking small in front of his "friends".

King Herod tried to kill Jesus when He was born. An angel appeared to Mary and Joseph telling them to flee to Egypt. This isn't the same guy. This is Herod the Tetrarch. He thought he was done with John. Now he's dealing with healings and teachings and words like "the kingdom is at hand". Herod the Tetrarch must have really thought John had come back from the dead to plague him. :cds:

I really like verse 9.

Luke 9:9 But Herod said, “I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things about?” And he tried to see him.

Since John was said to be Elijah raised from the dead.... I bet he wanted to see Jesus to make sure He wasn't John raised yet again!
