"Everybody has their own way of honoring Black History Month: some watch documentaries or read books about great Black achievements and the Civil Rights movement, some attend special events and celebrations with their family and community and others shoot themselves in the stomach with a "high-powered air rifle" and blame it on an imaginary Black guy.
Brent Thomas Posada, 34, of Redding, California, was reported to the police as a gunshot victim when he checked himself into a local hospital, Feb. 1, with a wound to his abdomen.
When questioned by police about what had happened, Posada told officers that he was standing on the sidewalk in front of his apartment when a Black man, wearing a hoodie sweatshirt and hightop sneakers, walked up and shot him with a handgun.
A local paper reported the initial allegations:
Posada told police the suspect approached him and pointed a small, black handgun at him. Posada pushed the suspect's arm to the side as the gun went off, hitting him in the abdomen... The suspect is described as a black, male adult in his mid- to late 20s, about 6 feet tall, weighing 185 pounds with black hair. He was wearing a black hoodie-style sweatshirt, blue jeans and black, high-top shoes with silver stripes.
Now that his story has fallen apart under investigation, Posada is admitting that he shot himself in the abdomen while sitting in his apartment. So far no charges have been filed against him.
While this is certainly not the first time that imaginary Black people have been blamed for crimes, the motivation behind this particular incident is still somewhat murky.
It's unclear if Posada shot himself and then decided to blame it on an imaginary Black man, or if he shot himself so he'd have something to blame on an imaginary Black man. "
