"Prior to reopening the remodeled Shooters Waterfront six days ago, new owner Meghan Leckey explained the decision to retain the name of the landmark restaurant this way: "Everyone has a Shooters story."

An off-duty Miami-Dade corrections officer reaching into his pocket for a valet ticket Saturday evening accidentally triggered his concealed handgun, firing a round that sent ricocheting shrapnel into six or more patrons people, according to police.

One of those injured was treated at Broward Health Medical Center and others were treated on the scene, according to Fort Lauderdale Det. DeAnna Greenlaw.

The shooting happened about 7:30 p.m. and drew a large emergency response that included at least six police cars, a fire truck and two ambulances.

The corrections officer had been dining in the bar area near the waterfront, police said, when his gun went off. He immediately called his supervisor and remained at the restaurant where he was interviewed by Miami-Dade internal affairs officers, according to Capt. Frank Sousa. The officer's name was not released Sunday by authorities.

"He did everything he was supposed to do," said Sousa.

Police deemed the shooting accidental, Sousa said.

"This was a very unfortunate situation that we wish did not happen," said Leckey, who was not at the restaurant when the gun went off. "It was quite a shock. This could have been a lot worse than it was." "

Sounds like someone wasn't practicing basic safety. No fault of the gun if an idiot screwed it away.

How come you NEVER seem to be at the right place at the right time?

OK Flame me. but in a carry state such as Florida wouldn't it be great to have insurance for accidents like this.

I mean those people who got shrapnel are pretty sure to sue this guy. They should anyway. Damned if I would want to pay for medical bills caused by some idiot who carried his pistol in his pocket.

You can, and it is available: CCWSafe. Been around since before old Trevon met his fate. They advertise around here.:buddies:

CCW Safe defends those who carry concealed against criminal, civil and administrative actions.

"he did everything he was supposed to do"

What, like keep a pistol in his pocket? A pistol without a standalone safety device? And be VERY FREAKING CAREFUL when fishing around in said pocket to NOT PULL THE FREAKING TRIGGER!!!!!!!

In what damned universe is that "everything you are supposed to do"? :cds:

 It is called incompetence. He didn't have it holstered, and the safety was not on. That is not an accident. JMO

Being a Glock, there is no safety to be on. All the safety is built into the single point failure of the trigger. If your finger pulls the trigger, it will fire.

Thanks, glhs. I thought all guns had safeties. Then it was even more dumb that he just had it loose in his pocket.

Well, it does, just not ones like most folks think of them, as a lever on the side that says "SAFE". There's a safety that keeps the firing pin out of line, and one that prevents the gun from firing if it's dropped, but both of those are moved out of the way, so to speak, by pulling the little bar in the center of the trigger.

In a Glock, the correct holster is part of the safety concept.

Did it say anywhere what he used to accomplish this feat ? 6 in one shot, that got to be some record.

A few things here:

"He did everything he was supposed to do," said Sousa. This is referring to what he was instructed to do if something like this happened by staying on scene and waiting for investigating officers.

He didn't have it holstered, and the safety was not on. It was his personal weapon. A holster is not required, and most revolvers or small semi's (pocket pistols) don't have safety's anyway. That's what makes most of those guns easily concealable and good for personal defense.

It was an accident, nothing intentional. But an avoidable accident, for sure. Next time, park your own car or keep your claim check, and anything else but the gun, out of your gun pocket.

An accident that could have, and probably has, happened elsewhere. Thank goodness no one was injured to any remotely serious degree.

I'm sure his fitness report will not bode well this time around, but should not affect his job status.

Bullet went down into the metal base of the table where it fragmented, so the woulds were all more shrapnel than bullet wounds.

Just saw the second article.

Carrying a Glock 19 in your pants pocket without a holster is negligent. I hope he gets some re-training from his employer about safe handling of his firearm. As a LEO he may be allowed to carry in a establishment that serves liquor, doesn't mean he can be careless about it.

That's like criminals getting time off for good behavior....the good behavior would have almost certainly kept them from going to jail in the first place.

Doing everything right should have kept 6 people from being injured by his playing pocket pool with his piece.
