I think you are referring to the Taliban, not Al-Quaeda. UBL created Al-Quaeda.

There was no Taliban during the Russian occupation. We did, however, work with bin Laden and other Wahabi fundamentalists that went on to create al queda.

You could say we therefore also worked with folks who went on to create the Taliban but, the Taliban had nothing to do with us until we invaded their country.

Al queda is different, very, so, the analogy works.
