Employee owned WinCo Foods

Prices as good or better than Wal-Mart? Healthcare coverage with dental and vision as low as $40 a month for employees? It’s not some stereotypical crunchy granola liberal health food co-op store in Brooklyn or San Francisco, it’s a company that has expanded across the Western United States (including Arizona and two new stores just opened in Texas) and it could be going nationwide before long.

And no government regulation to make them number 1, no regulation to make them employee owned, or provide certain beneifts, or pay, etc.

Free market does work.

Yes, you heard that right. Red states Texas and Arizona now have an employee owned and operated *gasp* “socialist” company which can provide groceries at the same or cheaper prices than Wal-Mart. This isn’t some flash in the pan, fly by night corporation either. WinCo was originally established in 1967 and became employee owned in 1985.

Winco isn't stupid, they go where the profits are ...

Is WinCo Foods Anti-Union? AFL-CIO Praises Wal-Mart Competitor, Then Deletes Blog Post

And what about all those claims of higher WinCo pay? The AFL-CIO’s blog post said that WinCo paid its front-line workers $11 an hour, compared to Wal-Mart’s $8 an hour. But neither retailer is very forthcoming about what its lowest-wage workers really take in. Read would only say that WinCo’s wages are based off prevailing wages in any particular area, which he said the company tries to meet or beat at least “a little bit.”

Kory Lundberg, a spokeswoman for Wal-Mart, said the company’s full-time employees earn an average of $12.78 an hour, but, as some critics have pointed out, that much-cited number excludes part-time workers, and factors in higher-paid department managers. Lundberg declined to comment on Wal-Mart’s wages compared to WinCo’s.

As it turns out, that $11-an-hour figure may have come from WinCo’s listing on Glassdoor, which compiles information from anonymous users.

Read said that WinCo opened its 88th store on Thursday. Compare that to Wal-Mart’s 4,000 plus, and the nightmare scenario that Flickinger described starts to seem more like a daydream. Even Read admitted that the comparison, based on size alone, is not really an accurate one.

“It’s nice to get good press, and it’s nice that people think well of us,” he said. “But I would say that Mr. Flickinger’s opinion is his opinion only.”

Size isn’t everything, of course. And when it comes to keeping prices down and workers happy, Read is more than willing to say that WinCo’s reputation is well-earned.

“We do treat our employee-owners well,” he said. “That demarcates us from many of our competitors.”

What are the average starting salaries, bonuses, benefits and travel requirements like at WinCo Foods?

What do you like best about working at WinCo Foods? Are there any great perks or special treats for employees?

Their starting salaries are usually 10-15c/hr over minimum wage. There is no special bonuses for non-management team. You are legible for benefits after 90 days of work, ONLY if you have worked 100 hrs every of those 3 months. They offer health and life insurance.

I wouldn't not recommend working at Winco. B/c they make your schedule horrible, they can make you finish your shift at 1 am and you are not even allowed to park your car in the parking lot by the store (even if you finish late). It's pretty scary to walk a long way in the dark through empty parking lots to get to your car. They always make you work weekends. Holidays. Doesn't matter. All the employees start part-time. One week you may get 38 hrs, another - 15. And there is no guarantee that one day they will let you work full-time. There is absolutely no working policies in this company that somehow would protect employees from abuse and harassment. Yes, people, it's a sweat shop big time!

The health benefits are very good. The pay starts low-minimum-and raises are based on hours worked. The hours worked depends on you. How eager are you to get a raise? How available are you? Decide why you're there. Are you there for a career or to supplement family income. Then work your hours, show up on time, do your job well..and you will do fine. Ask to change departments if you don't get it the first time, do it again. ESOP is really good. Stick it out and you could retire a millionaire....no kidding. You don't have to let the job take over your life to do well....prove yourself. You don't get rewards handed to you @ Winco, you have to earn it.

Union lawsuit blasts WinCo

A union of local food workers has sued WinCo Foods Inc. in Sacramento County Superior Court, alleging that the warehouse food store company is selling outdated foods and drugs.

In the lawsuit filed last month, United Food and Commercial Workers Union No. 588 alleges the chain is competing unfairly and unlawfully by violating health standards. It seeks an unspecified amount in customer refunds and attorney fees.

WinCo, an Idaho-based chain of 35 stores in five states, says the union is trying to drive away customers as the supermarket company plans to open a nonunion store in Roseville. The union disputes that charge.

WinCo also claims the sell-by dates stamped on food products are, with only a few exceptions, simply an internal tool used by manufacturers and retailers for maintaining the freshest products on shelves.

Really Sparx you hate Wal-mart so much you go against your UNION Pay Masters ....

20. Not so fast. The company is anti-union.
