Anyone else wonder why this person would steal merchandise and then return for "store credit?"

She is gonna steal pants and shirts... to return them for store credit... to buy pants and shirts? :eyebrow:

This is a hugeeee thing that happens at every store. This is nothing new. More often than not they go sell it online and get cash for it. I used to work returns at Home Depot years back and store credit is next to cash. Some stores ask for ID now for all transactions that give the returner store credit. Then the store can track how often you're 'returning' things without receipts and usually block you after a certain $ amount.

Also flags you for the Loss Prevention people...they figure out who you are after so many suspicious returns and then follow you around the store trying to catch you in the act. Almost always get caught.

Looks like she's been attacking some meth mites on that face, but doing meth is OK. Every social progressive knows that doing drugs is a victimless crime.

So the person grabbed stuff and then walked over to the return line? Don't people realize it's a little suspicious when you walk up to the return line and you're coming from inside the store instead of from outside? :eyebrow:

These idiots get desperate. They really think staff aren't watching. I learned a lot working with loss prevention. What people think they're going to get away with is unreal.

I always wonder if I'm being watched. Especially if I'm walking away from the cosmetics section, because I usually grab something small that will roll out of my cart (or could easily slide into my purse) I typically carry small stuff like this and wonder if the camera is watching me waiting for me to stick it in my purse because I didn't put it in the cart. I also don't like pulling my phone out of my purse when I'm in a store, because I'm afraid when I put it back into my purse, the "camera" will think I'm stealing something. I'd hate to be stopped outside the store for "stealing" my phone. LOL

"What people think" and "Don't people realize" requires a higher state of mind than a meth-head can bring to the table.

To get money for drugs.

Exactly which aisle in Kohl's are the "drugs" located in? Can you buy drugs with store credit?

I can understand if she returned for CASH.... but the story says "store credit" which, last I checked, meant you could only use to make purchases for store items.

So... back to my original question. Why steal store items... then return them... for credit to buy store items?

I picked up a few things at Giant one day and didn't scan something small enough to be shoved into a pants pocket; I don't remember what it was. Before I walked out the door, I saw it laying on the bottom of the cart, so I went back to the register I just left, scanned and paid for it, when I probably could have just walked out the door with it.

Well, I was talking with a Loss Prevention officer at Nordstroms in Annapolis one day and this topic came up. BY STORE POLICY, even if the LP officer observes a person doing this, they are to take NO ACTION except note the offenders car tag number OR get a vague description of the person and turn it over to MALL SECURITY......Why??? Because some corporate lawyer does not want to offend a NORDSTROMS customer......Thats NORDSTROMS at Annapolis Mall....

They take a $370 gift card to Kohl's, sell it to you or on E-Bay for $300, now they have money for drugs.

Did you see my reply? lol Store Credit = almost as good as cash.

What else are they supposed to do? They're not an actual officer. They do work hand-in-hand with local police though. Also, Nordstrom's is essentially "renting" that space as they're usually a part of a larger shopping complex, so of course things will have to go through the mall security/whatever contractors the landlord pays for. When I worked closely with LP at home depot, we usually sit on our own building and can bring matters straight to the police. Even then, they're still not allowed to approach anybody on SUSPICION. They have to actually walk out the store/through the cashiers to classify as stealing, and only then can they escort them to their LP office in the back and "detain" them until the cops show. And as an associate I can't do anything except alert Loss Prevention. Descriptions, license plate numbers...it was incessantly drilled into our heads to NEVER approach someone you might think is stealing. Or even chase after them into the parking lot.

Most of the time (don't think that's the case with this lil pill-poppin' chica) but in the bigger stores that have much more at stake (like HD...power tools, materials, etc. lots of $$$) these offenders are usually a part of some circuit. They go from store to store pulling the same scams. When these people are caught, sometimes it's after months or even years of Loss Prevention people and cops trading info with various surrounding stores or other same-store locations. Pictures, descriptions, stories all get circulated. If someone's stealing big-ticket items from one store, they're probably stealing from others.

From the stores I did part time work in the cameras are always running. In some of them loss and prevention make their own schedule, not even the manager knows when they are coming in. I remember in one store I saw the manager being taken out in handcuffs for stealing money.

just my guess but she figures she's less likely to get busted on shoplifting if she goes to the customer service counter and asks for a refund than if she were to head out the door.
Unless store security is observant she might just pull it off.
