PANGANDARAN, Indonesia - A tsunami crashed into beach resorts and fishing villages on Java island Monday, killing more than 300 people and leaving more than 160 missing after bulletins failed to reach the region because no warning system was in place.

At least 306 people were killed, officials said, with another 160 or more missing.

The Java coastal area was spared by the devastating Asian tsunami of 2004, but many residents recognized the danger when they saw the sea recede.

Frantic tourists and villagers shouted “Tsunami! Tsunami!” as the wave more than 6 feet high approached. Some climbed trees or fled to higher ground to escape while others crowded into inland mosques to pray. | MORE >>

The USGS reported the quake that caused it yesterday morning, and then early yesterday afternoon revised the strength of the quake from 7.2 to 7.7. When I saw the quake report in the morning, I wondered if they would send out their Tsunami alert; come to find out it wouldn't have made a difference because the island didn't have a way to receive or broadcast the alert. A very sad loss of life, for sure.

When I saw the quake report in the morning, I wondered if they would send out their Tsunami alert; come to find out it wouldn't have made a difference because the island didn't have a way to receive or broadcast the alert. A very sad loss of life, for sure.

The good news is if anything came out of the December Tsunami, residents learned to flee to higher ground when they fell a strong earthquake. My initial thought is this tsunami must have caused most of these deaths far frm the epicenter of far from where the earthquake was felt because I'd imagine most people heard the grim prospects of a tsunami shortly after an earthquake.

Not to crack a joke, but on the coast, chances are you can see the tsunami coming.

Who can forget the images of the December Tsunami (other than half of the nation's Republicans )

Didn't someone in al-Qaida say something along the lines of the earthquake in Pakistan (sorry for the children but it picked a damn fine place to happen ) was caused by a United States bombing campaign?
