US economy contracted in first quarter

In an echo of 2014, the US economy contracted in the first three months of the year, according to a second official estimate released on Friday.

The economy shrank 0.7 per cent on an annualised basis in the first quarter, the Commerce Department said. That is much weaker than the 0.2 per cent growth the first estimate showed.

Economists had expected a downward revision, with the consensus forecasting a contraction of 0.9 per cent.

From the NYT article, ""Volatile even in the best of times, the trade balance is especially hard to gauge in the wake of a labor dispute and slowdown at West Coast ports. Although clearly a negative in the first quarter, some experts like Ian Shepherdson of Pantheon Macroeconomics say a return to normal trade patterns could propel a healthy rebound in the second quarter."

That's interesting because the Norwegian Shipowner's Association (NSA) says in their Annual Report, "In tandem with and exclusive of the first point, many of the world’s major economies are still stalled in the wake of the global economic meltdown and lingering economic malaise of 2008. Seven years later, North America is one of the major economic bright spots, which is why the NSA counts the United States, Canada and Mexico as its top three countries for projected growth in 2015." http://www.marinelink.com/news/editorial-across-around391852.aspx

So the Norwegians are really counting on North America (primarily the US but Canada and Mexico too) to pull everyone else's fat out of the fire.

Is this something we didn't already know?

Yes, it was already known and the negative print was widely expected to be larger...although we still have one more revision coming. GRUPS, of course, only posted this because it is negative news. He didn't post the Q2, Q3 or Q4 GDP numbers from 2014 because they were good. He won't post the Q2 2015 GDP number because it will be better.

If you want to track Q2 GDP expectation, go here: https://www.frbatlanta.org/cqer/research/gdpnow.aspx I've posted this site on here a number of times. But since this site gives real time data--with no political BS--no one cares.

As for your other post, the US is still the world's largest economy---by far. Although it would be difficult, in normal times to call the US economy a "bright spot"--in today's muddle thru world, we look pretty good.
