This is a tough call. Servers & such should get some sort of tip. I can see the backlash against the city council but not the low level workers.

I know it is not appropriate to state facts here...however, the minimum wage in Seattle is not $15.

It is currently $11 and rising to $15 over the next 5-7 years depending on the size of the employer. http://www.seattle.gov/civilrights/labor-standards/minimum-wage

Additionally, if you would bother to look up the information (http://www.seattle.gov/civilrights/...-asked-questions/wages-and-compensation#wages), you would see that position that receive tips can have the tips counted as part of the minimum wage.

But, hey, why look anything up and present a factual argument when you can instead post horsesh!t?

But hey, why read the damn post and see that the OP wasn't sure if this idea was good thing or not? Nobody in here was agreeing with the card so why just go off like they did? He didn't writhe the damn card, so if you have a problem with it's contents, why not take it up with the cards author?

As an aside, most foreign countries pay a decent base pay for servers - ie $15 and do not accept gratuities. There's not even a space on your charge slip for writing in a tip amount. Americans are considered vulgar when they tip in many foreign locales.

Yup, but that's the thing. Over hear, servers make, what, $3 an hour? My understanding is servers over there LOVE Americans because they tip.

I know of no other profession where someone is judged so harshly to earn their living. If they cashier at foodlion doesnt say hello to me, bags my milk on top of my apples and texts her friend while making change he/she still gets paid the same wage day in and day out. If a server forgets someone's refill or the kitchen is backed up- very often thats coming out of their tip. We all have bad days but servers sometimes lose pay if their's affects someone else's - on purpose or not.

It's part of our culture, this pseudo capitalism that says everyone is on their own...unless you can exploit the gummint

That's another reason why we're way better than Europe: we're not Socialists (yet) and, if you're good, you can make a piss ton of money waiting tables. In areas where the cost of living is more reasonable, you can actually support yourself rather nicely on waitstaff tips. If a busy restaurant offered me a choice of $3/hr +tips or $15/hr, I'd take the $3 no question. Heck, I made an average of $20/hr when I worked at the pizza place 25 years ago. Pinch hitting at one of the higher end restaurants in the area, I'd walk out of a 6 hr shift with $150 in my pocket.

Friends daughter got a degree in biology, she chose to stay a waitress because she was making $200/night and had off during the day.

I don't think it's being "judged harshly" at all. Sure there are some aholes who don't tip no matter how hard the waitress busts her ass, but that's actually the best paying part-time job you can get - if you're good at it. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have all employees be tipped, from the chick at the drugstore to the kid who rings you up at Old Navy. Reduce their pay and make them work for the rest. You'd sure see a lot better customer service.

I don't want to open all the links on my phone, so please tell me, should I tip on Friday night or not since I'll be having dinner in Seattle.

TIA!

I find that surprising. Biology is the field to be in these days. I'll have to ask a buddy what his degeed people are starting at.

We *are* socialist, but that economic system has nothing to do with why Europeans don't tip their wait staff and we do. In Europe (or "over there" for people who have never left the U.S.), being a waiter is a respectable career. There is post-high school education for restaurant wait staff, they earn respectable salaries, and can raise a family, etc.). Here, while what you say is true -- lots of money can be made if you're good -- these generally are not career-oriented options. They are typically stepping stones to something else. That's why, by and large, service at American restaurants is terrible.

With respect to the question at hand, I am a 20%+ tipper for all but the worst of service. I don't make political statements with my tipping. That's just dumb.

With only a bachelor of science degree?.... My niece received her BS in Biology last spring and just started at her new position teaching High School Biology. The county she works for starts teachers with BS degree at $36,700.

She can't/ couldn't find a job making more than $50K a year with a biology degree?

Even with a grad degree there isn't much money in bio unless you do biotech/bioengineering. Most of it is research and that's mostly grants based which is no way to make cash.
