I struggled with where to put this. It's about cars, so maybe in The Ride. Informing people that they have been had about how clean the car they bought is, well that's Consumer Affairs. The EPA and CARB, both govt agencies, are bringing the hammer down, could be Politics.

In any case, VW had a hard time meeting EPA regs for emissions. So what they did was code the engine management system, such that it could tell when it was being emissions tested, and would jigger engine parameters to keep emissions down during the test........ Looks like the real emissions could be anywhere from 10% to 40% higher than it's supposed to be.

Should be a relatively simple chart showing MPG with varying levels of emissions controls. So, 50 mpg with less vs., what 35-40 with more, and then net total emissions.

Be interesting to see.

Old trick, heavy duty diesel engine makers have been caught doing this before. The ECU was programmed to recognize the test cycle and adjust parameters to optimize the emissions and under normal driving circumstances it operated differently, and this was in the 90's. Amazing what you can do with computer control vs a carburetor.
