Great Mills High School, which will hold its 88th commencement next month, is steeped in history ranging from its early years through the role it played in desegregating St. Mary’s County schools and later as home to a science, technology, engineering and mathematics academy.

Margaret Dean Thompson was among a handful of students who witnessed much of its early history firsthand. Thompson, born March 27, 1914, was one of the first female graduates of the school. She died last year at the age of 101, but thanks to some of her descendants, her time at the school will live on through photographs and other memorabilia.

My stepfather used to talk about being punished for misbehaving by having to spend the day keeping the fire going to heat the school.
